View Full Version : weird rpm stuff (kinda a repost) but please help!

alright, i have a few seemingly stange things going on with my car.

first off, it runs great, and has never died on my, and is always pertty good, but i do have a few quirks i want to iron out!

1) right when i start the car it will idle at 1800rpm for a few minutes, then it will slow down to 1100. i assume this is just the choke so its ok. am i right??
ps, if the car is warm it will skip the 1800rpm stage, and just go to 1100.

2)sometimes (only twice so far) i will start the car, and the rpm jumps up to 2000, (only for a short period of time, like 1/4 sec) and then it will "bounce" down really low. like 200-300, and it seems like its gonna die. after that it stays at the usual 1800rpm level.

3)when my car is cold (and only when cold as far as i can tell) if i floor it, i get really sluggish acceleration until about 3500-4000 rpm. once it reaches this point, it zooms like it is supposed to. its a noticable change, not just "i am in my power zone" lol//
the weird thing about this, is that it doesnt seem to happen all the time. of course, i dont always floor it when i first start driving, so maybe it would still be slow if i tried.

4)when i have been driving around and the temp is up (say 1/2 way up the h/c meter.) by that time my idle has usally calmed down to a nice 600rpm (prrrrrr). but if i sit in traffic, or drive thru. whatever, my temp gauge really starts rising... it will get to about 3/4 to HOT, and i will just crank on the heater at full bore. this will usually cool it down a bit, until i start moving again. when i am driving at speeds of 50+ the temp usually stays under halfway up. so i dont worry, but when i am sitting, it makes me nervous.

the pgm-fi light has only come on once while i was driving the car (only owned it for a few months) and my father said it came on maybe once a year for him, but it never seemed to run that worse, and the ilght would be gone once you turned on teh car again. :) who knows...

i can deal with all these problems, but i would really like to solve the temperature problem... since i dont want to overlook it and fry something. but the other quirks i can deal with.

some other things that could be useful, is the car hasnt had a tune up since i have owned it, and my dad didnt drive it much, so it "COULD" be dying for a tune up. the only thing i have done is changed the plugs and oil!

i know you guys have insight into these problems, so let it rip!

Tune-up and check fluids like the coolant.

spark plug wires, cap, rotor, thermostat, radiator flush, new coolant, pcv valve, good throttle body cleaning, and a carbon buildup cleaner. getting the injectors serviced as well is a good idea.

is your radiator fan working ??

thanks for the advice, that seems like a good project for me to work on after i have time to finish my struts!

and yes i think my rad fans work, but they may only work intermitantly (according to my dad!)

i will try doing what you guys said and let you know how it works!
