I was just wondering if a 2.1 dohc out of a 91 prelude si would work in my 89 dx.

Almost any engine can be swapped into the car. However, any swap other than the JDM B20A will be very expensive. This is because you will need custom mounts, axles, clutch/shift linkage setup, and wiring harnesses. Finding mounts has been complicated by the fact the Place Racing has gone out of business (no more B-series mounts). So to answer your question, any engine you want can work in your 89 dx (FI swap would also be required!!!) with the only issue being money and effort.

Besides that the B21 is not the greatest honda engine and the majority of prelude owners dump it for the 2.0 liter.
