hi, got lots of things taken care of on 89 lxi: new springs, dampers, ball joints on all four corners and new cv boot. Getting ready to sell car but have a question. Is it normal for these cars to whine in reverse? (manual transmission). Noise is something between a cat in heat and and electric mixer. Kinda loud with the wheels off the ground and running in reverse at idle. Seems to be coming from tranny. No noise in any other gear at any speed. Tranny shifts fine too.

its normal. the reverse gear idler is a straight cut gear, thats why it whines like a mofo

I used to make fun of my mom's 3g and how it sounded like it was winding up in reverse :D

Sounds to me like it's normal

it's normal. in fact, if you look at how manual trannies work on www.howstuffworks.com, they actually explain why it makes that noise.

edit: i guess it wasn't manual trannies, but it's actually specifically about the whirring noise: http://auto.howstuffworks.com/question522.htm

yep, that actually normal for almost all cars, manual and automatic alike in reverse. just imagine if your tranny made that sound in all the foward gears too. some older cooper mini's have strait cut foward gears, i bet that would get annoying.

all cars make that noise and it sounds like its gonna blow if you speed it up to about 5000 rpm! you can do a mean reverse 180 in a parking lot at that speed! but you gotta know what your doin or youll keep goin around! check out my avatar mini cooper baby !

because of the sound it makes shiffting from R to D.
and when i reverse the gear noise.
and when i take off ( hondas very own way of shifting i guess).
