16 mpg and fuel smell

Hey y'all,

I have an 89 se-i that runs awesome, but gets the shittiest gas mileage I've ever experienced in a 4-banger Honda. I get 14-16 mpg!!!! I might as well be driving a 5.0 mustang. I know this gets asked alot but my buddy was riding with me the other night and he said he smelled fuel (the heater was blowing). Any ideas on why such shitty MPG's and fuel smell ?????

bingo. 90% of the time this is what it is. Also check for leaks around the fuel filter and also the fuel return hose from the regulator. See if u find anything frayed or cracked hose. Those are the only places fuel could be leaking from.

Check your hardlines as well as a precaution, but smufguy is on the dot as far as what to look for.

Nice, that filter seems easily accessable. I will check those lines. I did notice that there was old fuel (like orangey brown) goo around the injectors also. She needs my attention bad!

here are the things you wanna get from honda mainly,

Top Injector O-Ring ~ 4 quantities ~ part #: 91301-PM7-003
Bottom injector Seal ring ~ 4 quantities ~ part #: 16472-PD6-000 or 16472-P10-A01 .

the above are $1.30 and $5.40 respectively from the dealership which run you about $27 all in all to get all those. You can also get full service kits from Napa with each costing about $8.50 which run you about $34 without taxes for all 4 injectors. You dont really need to change the cusion rings, but some do but i dont.

NOTE: when you install the new O rings. make sure you coat them in Clean motor oil before you put them on the injectors. And also, stick the injectors in the fuel pipe (fuel rail) before you push them in place to the manifold. You absolutely need to follow this and the oiling part. Here is a pic to show you how its done.

Just curious...why is it imperative to place the injectors in the rail before installing? BTW, your info is extremely helpful :rockon:

so that you wont damage the o-rings. I changed mine last month and i stuck the injectors in the manifold and pushed the fuel rail on top of it. On its way down, it chewed up my new o ring, and it made it leak even more. I wish i took some HQ pics of that. So i reordered the o rings, and finally got it done the right wya.


pS: In some of the pics i posted earlier of my engine bay, would have a tissue paper wrapped around an injectors, thats why ;)
