I don't know what is going on but there is a rumor that Honeywell and Dupont the 2 largest US manufacturers of R134 have ceased production to drive the price up. :uh:

Just a word to the rest of you who might want to pick up a few extra cans.


Now I understand that there are some of you who are going to rant about this and that, so do what you will.

I am just trying to pass on the information that I am finding out.

R134a is being replaced, this is why all the major discount Walmart, Target, Kmart and who ever else is getting rid of their stock.

I am not sure of what it is being replaced with, but this is going to drive the price of R134a through the roof.

My suggestion is for you all to go and grab a few cans, because if you remember the R12 conversion nightmare and price gouging.

But the last time that I saw a store start to clear their stock, they pulled the R12. And it was like gold in a can.

Walmart is starting to clear their R134 stock, they've been clearing their stock for a few months. I couldn't figure out why until I heard the rumor.

Its not that its going away, the two biggist producers are trying to drive the price up.

I would pick up a few can just to be on the safe side.

why would they do that?? they'd lose out. Its the laws of supply and demand. the price would go up, but when they put their product back on the market the price would drop down again.

what do you use if you dont have R134?? R12 was discontinued 'because it was bad for the environment'. not because the price was low. . .

All I am saying, is that a rumor is going around. just keep your eyes and ears open to the rising price of freon.

I just picked up eleven 15oz premixed cans of R134 from Walmart @ $5.00 a can this is a can that normally sales for $10.99 and up.

Now the last time a store did this was to clear their selves so they wouldn't be responsible for the disposal fees of a possibly controlled hazardous material. So what do they do reduce their prices to clear it off their selves at clearance prices.

Now again I'm not saying that it is being replaced by anything.

But if it goes to a controlled hazardous material resulting in no more cheap freon bought over the counter at your local auto or discount store.

actually, ther eis a coolant out there that's supposed to be a better all-around refridgerant, and it's organic...

and if all else fails, just use propane :p... it IS a refridgerant, you know

I use Es-12a. It as well or better than r134, dont dont worry if they take it off the market. I wrote my HOW-TO using this stuff, and you can get it online prety darn cheap. I've also put it in a second car, and it works pretty well on most hot southern days.

It's also been 3-4 years now since ive done the AC and it still works strong. I dont think this is as a big of a deal for people that need to convert coolants(like us).

Actually come to think about it I heard that Dupont is currently designing a better version of R134a and their plans are to replace R134a by with this superior coolant by regulating it like they did years ago with R12. What they did was they releashed R134a and then they regulated R12 so that R134a would be more easy to come by. I dont know who true it is but it wouldnt surprise me

I went by walmart and there is a mountain of 134a, it's not going anywhere. they are even starting to put it in freezers and stuff.
