When i was driving my car this fall and had to sit in traffic my engine would over heat. The cooling fans wouldn't come on. Now that it's cold out my car won't heat up. I think it might be a faulty thermoustat since everything else checked out ok. How do I test the thermostat to tell if thats my problem?

place your thermostat into a pot of boiling water. It should open at the specified temperature. (Download the shop manual from http://www.pauldesign.ru/ there is a testing procedure for the thermostat outlined with pictures and steps) Just replace the thermostat and don't bother testing it. Chances are it is stuck open. You can get a thermostat from any auto parts store. Get the thermostat gasket from the dealer. It's a 20 minute job including testing the engine afterwards. Hope this helps.

yeah most of the time its your thermostat. Make sure u read the temperature rating on the thermostat, i think its about 203 F. its only under $6 and since its right under the distributor, u might have to remove it.

When I replaced mine I didn't remove the distributor. There is enough space to get to it without messing with it.

If you have it out already just replace it. It's most likely your problem. The symptoms are just like mine when it went bad.
