how does a failing or bad alt effect the performance of the carb system?

it doesn't charge the battery... basicly you are running off your battery if you are not putting out enough power from the alt... so eventualy your battery can drain but in the mean time things like your ignition system and fuel pump will be in weakened... you probably wont burn gas fully and you wont put out enough fuel flow to meet the engine demand.

Also when you turn on your lights or the fans come on you get even more drain and you'll get a bad idle or may even stall...
