Head without P&P job... (should be done tomorrow, and I'll have pics)
(notice how pitted the gasket surface is! that'll be taken care of too)

Oh yeah, and I'll be sure to get some pics of the 3 angle valve job too! :D

im sooooooooo in love with the dome of the head. it looks pretty damn fantastic. God it looks soo clean. Nice job dude. Also, .040 over? normally its .030 over so u better find a good piston and rings to compansate for it. ;) But in all. It looks hot.

PS: are you getting the block (outisde) coated with ceramic paint or something? cause it looks like it will rust soon. ;)

as far as price goes, there's a shop in town here called "Geddes Auto Machine"
the place has been in business for 24 years and offers a 3 year/unlimited mileage warranty on parts and labor. If the car's engine ever busts, they fix it, and they pay for the towing to the shop, and they pay for a rental car for me until the engine is back and running. Nice huh?

All this is costing about 1200. (my dad has taken a lot of engines to this shop, so they hooked me up too)

We decided to go with a race cam too. :D

So, this is all that's being done for that price:
Bored/Honed
Cleaned block and head
Re-turned/resurfaced crank
P&P
3-angle valve job
cam seats resurfaced
race cam
full rebuild kit (pistons are sized correctly at 0.040 over, but all cylinders were bored to match the specific piston that's going in it) :)
and assembly

And yes, I'm sticking with the CARB! :) I want to maybe upgrade to a weber, or maybe duel carbs from a prelude... not sure... ideas?

also, hopefully I'll be able to head over to the shop and take some more pictures this afternoon for everyone's viewing pleasure.

**edit** btw, about that smudge: I was messing around with some of the old parts, and then I went to touch the surface of the block to feel how smooth it was, and Oops! :hs:

How the hell did they get the head so clean? Can you find out!! Are you going to do pics of the headwork before it's assembled?

Well, I went by the shop the other day, and I found out that the head was a might bit warped... from being overheated...

Apparently, it needed some extra help with line boring (or something). So, that's why I haven't updated pictures yet. Tomorrow or the day after I should have pics of the final product BEFORE it's assembled. :D

I'm extremely anxious to see this thing with its valve job and P&P! Sorry to keep everyone waiting.

about the head. you have two choices:
A20 head. you can blot up carb manifold and get weber for it. or you can make custom one and get DCOE.
A18 head. by just slapping it on A20 block you will increase compression. do some work to it and it will be nice head. the problem with A18 is that it comes with dual keihin bike carbs. that you will have to figure out on how they work or get two new ones. Stock carb manifold won't bolt up, tried it.

rjudgey
04-04-2005, 08:16 AM
or get A18 head and autoquip or speedline inlet manifold for twin weber dcoe's, with the right headwork and big valve inlet conversion you can easily hit 180+bhp upto 200bhp if you really know what your doing.

racerx
04-04-2005, 01:44 PM
Sweet, thanks for the info.

And it was hot tanking, btw. Yeah, it's looks hella nice. I'd never be able to get it that clean with just degreaser and carb cleaner.

quick update:
Well, I went to the shop on thursday to take pics and hopefully pic up the completed engine...

Unfortunately, the head has some hairline fractures in it!!! :( :( :(

So now I have to go find a decent head... any idea how much honda would charge for one?

I'm thinking about just parking my car for a few days and using the head that's on the current motor... oi... sorry for the delay.

lots of money had some old guy buy a new head for a Lude that i bought for parts set hime back about £500 pounds for a bare head and that was about 8 years ago!! Might have gone down in price since!!
Could try would be interesting to find out howmuch a new one is!!

No junkyard nearby?

racerx
04-11-2005, 06:13 PM
There's plenty of junkyards, but I just want to find one that I "know" will be good already. If it's in the junkyard, chances are much greater that it's already cracked, ya know?

I called honda:
Head with assembly: 1200
Head w/o assembly: 1128.

wtf??? lol :) Junkyard: 50

Vanilla: yeah man, I'd appreciate that! Let me know when you can.

Robs89LXi
04-11-2005, 06:16 PM
Not necessarily. Look for a car that has been wrecked. Check the dipstick, look for oil around the gasket, etc. You can find good heads, and a whole lot cheaper too.

racerx
04-11-2005, 06:23 PM
yeah, that's a good idea. hmm...

ok, i'll go get it from tha machine shop... it'll be friday before i can get out there... and i understand you not buing it because you need it sooner...

oh, and it came off a a car that ran like new when parked (engine didn't even burn oil)...

Ask rjudgey to confirm this but I believe the ES 1.8L CVCC head is the same as the A18. He's the expert on A18/A20 hybrids. I have a used ES head with valve train and camshaft. If you are interested I can send pics. I have alot of ES extras too. If you wanted to mess about experimenting with higher CR then it might be fun. I would not suggest putting this on a daily driver though. Whatever head you choose...most user will agree that head work can make or break a good motor. If you choose to adapt this head a custom copper head gasket maybe needed. Plus as mentioned there are ready made ES head intake adaptors for twin Weber DCOEs if you want to go that route. Ahhhaha come join the DARKSIDE and run DCOEs... :bowrofl: :bowrofl: :bowrofl:

racerx
04-12-2005, 07:04 AM
lol, i don't think so. i remember spending nearly an entire day tuning the twin carbs on my dad's '72 triumph GT6. it was insane!!! (but worth it in the end :) )

Anyway, this is going to be a daily driver, so I think I'll just stick with the A20 head.

When I get it, though, I'm still planning on having it milled to increase CR a tad (maybe .5?), and all the other things are still planned. (3-angle valve job and P&P)

The race camshaft from delta is still going in too.

Vanilla: friday would probably be just fine, since I'm going to be busy as all @#$% this week. Just pm me or e-mail me some pics. (or just post em here.) Thanks!

will do

now to hope that the machinist got it ripped down and cleaned... i hear he's slow (he's had it for months now, though)... should be done... this was for a home porting project, but i've gotten another parts car so i can let this one go...

i'll get pics up as soon as i get them... and are you 56k? i can make them pretty large if you want the detail...

no ES head won't work will only fit onto an early Prelude ET or 2d Accord block, looks like youstuck with that one!!
Stick with A20 head nice big ports just what you need for big fat valves and camshaft!!

Robs89LXi
06-04-2005, 03:20 AM
I can get one here from the local pick-your-part for cheap too, but the shipping would kill ya. Most junkyards I've ever been to offer a garauntee, and if you are going to have it milled anyway, the machine shop is going to check it to see if it is good before they start anyway. If it is not, take it back to the junkyard, and pull another. If money is an issue (and when is it not :), eh?), that is what I would do.

well, actually, i just purchased this item yesterday!
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=33617&item=7978043611&rd=1

now i will finally have the complete motor i'm looking for!!! :D
also, one of my friends just acquired an 88 LX for free from his grandma, and he wants to get rid of it, so i might take it off his hands, and put the new motor in that, instead of the 87 DX.
schwing! :D power doors, power locks, sunroof, and a brand spankin' new motor!

That is a nice find. A complete job like what they described cost me $250 here, so you did good. Hope it is all legit, but it sounds like an honest sale. If you are still in contact with him, ask him how many more he has like that. There may be others here who might be interested.

racerx
06-07-2005, 07:00 PM
he said he's been doing this consistantly for a while now. he gets heads as a core from the people who buy them from him, and he pretty much rebuilds em and sells em. so, about a week after i send mine back to him, he should be selling another.

he says he has an accord head on eBay every couple of weeks.

smufguy
06-07-2005, 07:47 PM
thats not bad for the price, but 200 bux for a stock rebuild is still pretty high. I think a good local perf shop can do more for that price.

racerx
06-14-2005, 09:15 AM
got the head in yesterday. it's perfect.

for 200, i got:
head
camshaft
rockerarm assembly
complete valve train, with new guides, seats, springs and retainers
3 angle valve job
complete head gasket set (head, ex, in, valve cover, cam, thermostat, washers & nuts for valve cover, etc)

no p&p, but that's ok i guess.
i have to send the cracked head back to him, but that's a-ok with me since i have no use for it.
i think i did pretty well.
oh and it's all assembled too.
