Are there any differences between the A20 engines of different years or carb/efi? If so, which ones would be better to get? My neighbor gave me an 87 lx-i hatchback Automatic and the motor is locked up. I'm sorry if this has been asked before but i didn't know what to search for.

86-89 carb had 98Hp; EFI had 110
88/89 EFI has 122hp
I'd try to get an 88/89 engine if I could....
aaaahhhhhh... here we go:

does the extra power come from a difference in the engine or the ecu/etc.?

engine... the carbed motor and 86/87 EFI motor has lower compression than the 88/89 EFI motor, the 88 EFI motor has a different intake manifold and different exhaust manifold, but from what i've hear the 86/87 EFI has a better cam than the rest...

hope that helps

I am ripping mine out of a 88 hatchy dx.The carb is messed up I think, but it runs fine other than that for 5 minutes then shuts off,I cant figure it out,but if you or anyone else wants it,Ill make a deal with ya's.

man, too bad you didn't post this like 2 weeks ago. I had 2 engines. One was an 87 a20a3, and other was a 89 a20a1 (which was made to EFI) I used the a20a3, though, for parts to make the a20a1 efi. I ended up just throwing them out.

as for the whole carb thing. If they gave you a a20a3 car, stick with a20a3! I have never had any luck (NOTICE KEY WORD!) with the carbs. Many out there would disagree, but i find the honda carbs were just too tempormental for my taste. With EFI once everything works adequate i have never had a problem with her.

yeah, the keihin carbs on our cars are garbage if you plan on daily driving it... i've heard that they can be good for "race" applications where a stock carb would be needed, but i have never gotten mine to both work well daily and perform well...

if you come out with an EFI motor and you're carbed, do yourself the favor and put in the extra fuel line and change your wiring so you'll be EFI... you don't have that problem, but you'll run into slight wiring problems with your car if you get an 88/89 a20a3, simple because the differences... i would assume you could run the extra wiring and change computers, but that's a bit of a PITA... you chould change manifolds, though, and be fine...

i dont recal the differences in wiring on 88/9 and 86/7. The only thing i remember being differnt is location of the fast idle thingy.

I'd get the EFI if you don't have any experience with carbs... there is so much that can potentially cause problems on old A20A1's

As for Power that's another issue.

Thanks for all your help. I'll probably pull an 88/89 FI motor from the junkyard in about 2 weeks.

BTW I saw an SE-i at crazy rays in baltimore the other day with all the disk brake parts on it if anyone in the area is looking to swap out their drums.

you are not far away from me. i wish i had money for those brakes.

yes, the 88/89 uses a different computer, and has 2 o2 sensors (86/87 has one) and the two-stage manifold, with requires more wiring... few other minor changes, too... location of the IAT sensor, and a few other sensors...

I can just switch manifolds right?

yeah, you can... you get higher compression that way, too

yeah me too, but i got to get it running first. pretty soon i'll have some play money. I'm planing on building the old motor for a turbo, but that will probably be a while.

you wouldn't happen to know the compression ratios for the fuel injected engines would you?

Hey you're in Glen Burnie? I live in Easton and I have a good '88 block out of my sedan if you want...I'm currently in the process of a engine tear-down and I have a lot of good engine parts...if you don't want the block it's going to be crushed with what's left of my old 3G so let me know what's up.

EDIT - It's a A20A3...I have alot of parts for it and it ran perfectly before it was removed. If you have a pickup truck it wouldn't be very difficult for you to come pick it up. I hate to see it go to waste...

9.1-1 in the 86/87, 9.3-1 in the 88/89...

cam difference is negligible
the best motor is 88-89 EFI with higher compression, 2-stage intake manifolds, 4-2-1 "header"
2nd best are the carb motors, any year, with 9.1 compression. You can swap the EFI manifolds (and even the head) onto this block
3rd place are the 86-87 EFI motors w/ single plane intake and 8.8 (?) compression.

There were little differences with egr control and stuff with the EFI cars but they can all be interchanged with minimal work

Yeah I have the bare block, and I'll sell you the pistons too if you want. It's basically a parts car and you can have whatever you want that's left on it. Make me an offer on the block. It's got 166,xxx on it. Cylinder bores are very smooth.

P.S - The block is in Trappe if you know where that is...

i'll probably just pull a motor from the junkyard. i really need a complete engine right now since i need to get it running, inspected and taged by the end of the month because the tags are about to expire on my van and i want to sell it soon

Actually, I don't have time right now to pull the crank out so I'll sell it to you as a short block if you want. I't doesn't burn any oil...I would keep it but I don't have the space right now and I would really hate to see it crushed rather than used again. It ran perfectly before I crashed the car and I drove it down a highway to transport it 3 days later so I'm sure that the crash hadn't affected the motor.

I just pulled a motor over the weekend and i really dont have room to store another block right now, otherwise I would buy it off you. sorry i took so long to reply.

I have an 89 Accord LXi with a 2.0 A20A3 Engine currently in it, but it's in dire need of replacing.

Anyone got a good honda engine they wanna wheel and deal on? :-)
