Anyone who's ever got a new/used tranny, please post your experiences here. I need one, but I'm not sure if I should just rebuild the one I have, get a brand spankin new one from honda, or get one from a junkyard...

tell me what you think the best idea is. i'm totally rebuilding my engine, and getting a new clutch, just got all new rotors, drums, pads, callipers, ball joints, etc...

As you can see, I'm going through an entire restoration process.

thanks for your info.

What's is wrong with yours? That will determine whether it's a better starting place than another one with an unknown history. I'd expect a new one to be too expensive to even consider.

actually, i called honda. it's not even available anymore.

the problem is:
2nd and 3rd gear crunches on a regular basis. I'm thinking the syncros are shot. And if that's the case, the gears are probably dead now too, since i've been driving it like this for thousands of miles...

I just don't have any idea about cost to rebuild. I suppose I should just take it to a shop and ask them.

Anyone ever done this before? How much would it cost?

To have someone else rebuild it I'd expect something between $500-$1000. Our transaxles aren't terribly complicated. With the factory service manual a complete set of syncros and whatever other parts you find that you need you'd probably come in well under $500 if you do it yourself. I remember reading someone on here a while ago that the syncros are also available from another manufacturer for quite a bit less than Honda's if you're trying to keep costs down.

As long as none of your gears whine you should be ok with just a set of syncros. I'd replace the shift shaft seal and boot as well. Once it's apart some other problems may become more obvious though. You us know what you find.

Just call around for transmission specialist shops. I was lucky in finding one in Northern FL to replace mine. I swapped them like 4 transmissions from ES motors and we ended up getting two fully rebuilt and warrantied A20 trannys (one for the A20A1 and one for the EFI A20A3 (E2Q5 I believe)) and it ended up being less than $1000 for the two. As for Colorado...I dunno. I leave tranny work for the pros too much gunk and tight components for me to mess about with. :barf:
