well im now considering getting rid of this accord. its an 89 lx-i coupe with power windows, power sunroof, power steering, a/c, 5-speed.

the car is champaign/brown with about 170,XXX miles on it

the good:

-new exedy clutch ($100 + $200 job)
-new brakes, rotors & drums
-plenty of life on the tires
-very minimal rust!
-its all stock or so it seems.
-tranny shifts smoothly
-the interior is pretty clean
-i've changed the oil, oil filter, air filter, & gas filter
-new cap & rotor, as of this past sunday(5-15-05)

the bad:

-factory speakers & radio
-the passenger door is dented in (got it that way)
-there is some very minor rust on the rear quarter panels

-the car seems to have some trouble getting up to speed (can't seem to be able to figure that out... pretty much the reason for my giving up on it)
^^^ PROBLEM FIXED :)

-i believe there is some sort of leak coming from the car, but havent really look into it
-the sunroof leaks a bit
-the right rear tail light is broken (got it that way)
-the bumper is dented in right by where the taillight is busted
-the roof lining is hanging
-i believe it is in need of a new suspension... but im not sure i rarely drive the thing
*Edit* - during winter the car seemed to act funny with the driver's side window... somedays it would work & other days it wouldnt. but now that it is nice out, it seems to work fine

anyhow, hopefully that is enough for you guys to let me know what it may be worth.

thanks

don't know, need pics. and also depends on where you live. i know chicago is known for blizzards and hail. assuming you have a very strait body and a clean motor that runs smoth, i'd say about 1500.

but you might be better off gettin a quote from one of those experts from the antique road show.

I think you could get from 1200 to 1500 just from the description, maybe lower if Hondas aren't as popular where you live.

$800-$1200. Your bad outweighs the good.

honestly, all that stuff is easily fixable. Keep it, get new parts(that you need), start reading about engine mods if you want it to go faster.

it not getting up to speed might be something simple like a fuel filter or other easily replaced / inexpensive part. Its worth searching further

^^^ i just cant figure it out :(, ive tried the fuel filter, the pcv valve, changing the oil, changing the air filter, temporarly disconnecting the fuel regulator. i will admith though, it has gotten better since the first time i drove it. its the darnest thing. if you dont push the car hard it will seem to get up to speed just fine. but, say im already rolling, and i want to drop it down a gear and give it some go power, it seems like the car is slowing down rather than speeding up! not only that but the car has trouble getting past 80mph

wow i was thinking you guys were going to tell me that i couldnt get more than like $600 dollars for this thing... interesting. but i doubt i will get more than $800 dollars for it around here, that is if end up selling it.

Check the timing on that if you can. Seems like a little detonation going on there.

do i need a model specific type timing light?

88Accord-DX
05-06-2005, 11:09 PM
No, just plug the vacuum advance. Point the timing light at the flywheel through the peep hole.

gsus
05-06-2005, 11:15 PM
doesn sound so hard, how do i know if its timed properly or not? and if its not... how do you adjust the timing?

thanks!

The light will hit the TDC mark on the flywheel. Hook it up around #1 spark plug wire. You adjust it by turning the distributor forward or backward to advance or retard it.

oh ok, thanks alot :)
i'll see if i can give that a shot tomorrow

I don't how old the belt is on your car, but there is a possibility it could have jumped a tooth. If the timing is ok, let us know. The timing is the first thing to check to see where you stand. If it is ok, then something else needs looked at. ;)

whow. I go to school in Chicago, on the south side though. check out chicagolandaccordclub.com if you haven't already, there may be people on there who might want to help you fix it up. 3rd gens are everywhere in Chi, especially on the north side of the city, and 70% are in the condition you described yours in. Good luck getting good money for it.

thanks for all the replies guys! but unfortunately i have not had any time to check the timing on the accord yet since i seem to be focusing more on my mr2 right now... but i'll have to check it soon.

man, that's in pretty good condition. it's got a few imperfections, but nothing that couldn't be fixed. does that say 75,671 or 175,671? could the sag in the headliner be from water? could there be a problem with the tranny that's keeping it from getting up to speed?

sporkHSP

a new taillight, and new moldings for the passeneger side and maybe a rear bumper and the car would look pretty good (by new i mean from the junkyard). I can't really tell, but the damage on the door looks pretty workable, the moldings make it look alot worse. I bet if you wanted to, you could take off the door panel on the inside and pop most of that dent out, or at least give it a try.
My passenger door has a big dent in it, and my passenger fender was messed up, but after I got a new fender and a new piece of molding on the passenger door, the car looks 10X better. The door is still dented, but its not really noticable unless you pay attention. I have pics of all of this on my cardomain page (click the sig pic).

Oh, and if you do hold onto it, you would be suprized at how much more you will like the car once it looks good and runs better. I wanted to get rid of mine, and when I started to fix it up to sell it, I re-fell in love with it.

its has 175,671 :D and the sag could be from the water, since the sunroof does leak sometimes. as far as something being wrong with the tranny... well i dont know.

in my old accord (back in '03) i had a dent similar to this... and i had a friend with a size 14 shoe push out the door... it worked quite well. unfortunately i only have pics of my that car once it was crashed (you can find those pics if you look for my first post on this board).

ok guys, i finally got around to trying to check the timing on saturday... but my friend ended up breaking the distributor vacuum timing advance :slap: (the thing that sits on top of the distributor). so sunday i was going to go to a junkyard to pick the piece up... but all the junkyards seemed to have been closed :(. so i was forced to buy a new one from autozone for $50 :(... if i did not get the piece, my dad was going to take my mr2 to work!!! :nervous:

anyhow, i got the new piece on, but then another problem came up... i broke the cap... so i figured i may aswell get both the cap & rotor. after figuring out why i kept on stripping bolts with the cap... i was finally able to check the timing... which was off. finally when we were done i got in the car with no expectation of change.... I WAS WRONG!!!! it felt just like my old accord :)!!!! so the getting up to speed problem is fixed.

-gsus

ps - did you guys know that the car has enough power to make the wheels chirp in second gear (after already peeling out, and gunning first gear)?

Well..considering I have 205/50/15 and a weak ass stock clutch, I can't. I can outbreak an MR2 with my accord so I figure my tires are alot better than his. =)
