Well guys the H/B is running great, i found that i had crossed some vaccum lines up on reassembly :slap: she has great power and smooth as glass now

One thing is puzzling, and i searched for this but did not really find an answer
Before i did the top end rebuild the car would smoke on start up, for about 15 seconds pretty heavily, then clear up. This has not really concerned me due to the car having 200k on the clock, and only losing around 8-10 oz of oil between changes( 2800-3000 miles, depends on how it has been driven). I'm used to "small block" chevys and their junk valve stem seals billowing smoke, so this is no big deal to me. However, this is my wifes car, and following the rebuild it still does this, though not quite as bad.And now i'm hearing the " it still smokes, why is it still doing this, I just spent 600 bucks on a car that still smokes!!!!! :rant: :blah:

i had a full rebuild done on the head, grind valves and seats,all new guides installed, head "decked" for straightness
During reassembly i noticed the plastic tube that the pcv valve sits in was clogged, so i cleaned it out and instaslled a new valve.
I saw this tube ran down to what looks like an oil vapor separator. Is it possible that this is saturated because the valve was plugged shut.
Any how it isn't a big deal to me, but the wife is kinda fumed :devil: :argue: :blah:
Any sugestions would be appreciated, like i said other than the smoke it runs great

most likely it is your rings.
i had the same problem on my old car. it would smoke like crazy when it is cold out.
when it is warm, above 32 deg. the engine didn't smoke.
sounds like you have to do the bottom end rebuild next.

Sure is, but it is getting summer here, so it should be fine.
I'll use 50 weight if i have to :jaw: j/k It does not smoke that bad,and it smokes only about 10 seconds on first start up, but the wife can't understand why it smokes :blah: I told her to read the odometer for the answer (211,000 miles). I was just wondering if anything besides a lower end rebuild, could cause it to smoke this way. Every vehicle i've owned(mostly chevys), has smoked on start up , and was cured by replacing valve seals, this one was not cured, but helped alot

20w50??!? A mechanic put that into a cavalier i had once and the bottom end went out less than 100 miles later :mad:

if you have smoke at startup, its most likely your valve stem seals are going out. its a common problem with hondas.

Taht's what has me wondering, NX racer, the head was just fully rebuilt

It sounds like shepherd is on the right track. I had a similar problem with the A20 in my Prelude. It would smoke for a few minutes until it had warmed up. Rebuilding the head did pretty much nothing for the smoking--it would just run a little smoother while filling the neighborhood with gray smoke. After a wet/dry compression test indicated bad rings I did a half assed bottom end rebuild leaving the engine in the car only replacing gaskets and rings and honing the cylinders with a drill. That fixed everything and it ran great right up until it was stolen from my apartment.

yep, do a compression test and see what kind of shape the bottom end is in. I'm guessing you'll have to re-ring that bizzle.

Had the same problem with my 86 EXi. When i was ready to change the oil i ran a bottle of engine flush through it. Then change the oil and filter and it seem to be good for about 2 or 3 oil changes and then start up again. I finally took the engine apart and found it was the oil rings on the piston that were all carbon/old oil deposits up and the engine flush would, i guess free them up enough they would expand again and wouldn't let any oil up by. If it was the valve seals it should just give you a puff of smoke, not 15 second of heavy smoke. So i would give that a try, i mean even if you did it a couple of times it might save you from ripping apart the engine again for a while.
