I dunno if anyone looked into this or made an attempt, but is there a way to do a distributorless ignition system for a car with a distributor? Not necessarily a 3gee, any car.

yeah, programmable ignition systems can be done. as long as you can get a cylinder position reading to the electronic ignition controller, you're golden.

In the case of the 3G, you would have to leave the distributor attached to get the cylinder position sensor readings. then, rather than connecting the spark plugs wires to the dizzy cap, you would run them to your electronic ignition system.

sean did a HUGE project about this. it was part of his turbo project. Read up on his posts. Search for DIS system. Should give you pretty good info on what all it takes to do this kind of setup.

Is the DIS system any benefit? Or is it best to just keep your distributor and get an MSD box and be done with it?

DIS is OK, but its a HUGE headache. Not really worth it IMO. The best thing to do is convert to OBD1 so you can run Hondata or Uberdata with a custom fuel map. that way you're not relying on a vacuum advance distributor.
