I have a 86 lx carb'd. When I start the car the idle goes up to 2500, if I tap the gas it goes down to 1000. It sometimes will rise back up. Ive checked for vaccum leaks, and I didn't find any. So does anybody know how to test for computer codes on this car? Thanks.

Again, that's normal behavior for a 3g carb. It is how the automatic choke works on these old cars. I agree it could be a nuisance for guys on warm climates, or a godsend for those with cold winters like me.. :bowrofl:
If u dont like it , u can modify it, there are few posts around here about rigging a manual choke or getting rid of choke altogether.

Yep, thats normal. On my 88 hatchback if I turn it on and tap the gas to release the choke from 2000rpm within the first 15 or so seconds it will go back to 1000 and then go back to 2000 in a few moments. To avoid this just wait ~30 seconds, tap the gas and the choke will release and no longer engage ( until the engine gets cold again )...

Have to agree, that is normal. That is the fast idle unloader coming off the highest step after it warms up. Might want to adjust the idle screw some, 1000 rpm is just a tad high.

*edit* The (below/above) is true, wait a little longer and tap the accelerator pedal again, should kick back down.

Ya, I got my temp plates today & it is only on a cold engine. It idles about 600-700 warm, so its definitely not computer related. So should I lower the high idle?

Thanks, Matt

I just got 89 coupe one month ago. It has same problem. Even though, it somethimes can reach 3000. Now, the weather become hot, once I tap it, it goes down to 1000 or 800. The horn does not work, during fixing it, I broke the fuse for panel light. I fixed aileron light, but the old battery become dead. Because it shaking a little bit, I added some injector cleaner. The damning things begin. It will stop after I boost the cold car. The warm car shakes between 500 to 1000. Before the spark plug can burn correctly, but now it accumulated carbon on it. I checked the float level it seems right. I went to garage, the guy say need to clean carburetor, and it costs 200. What is the problem? Can I fix it by myself?

200 to clean a carb? I'd go get a aerosol can of carb cleaner, spray it in the linkages while revving the engne up & down.

And if u have neighbours like me dont do it when their around, it will have black exhaust during the process.

My 88 Accord used to shake alot and it used to idle uuuuuup and dooooown. I bought a timing light and checked the timing and this thing was everywhere. It would also keep trying to run after I turned it off. Well, when I set the timing CORRECTLY, all that changed. So, check the timing and see what you get. Oh, and yes! You can clean that carb yourself.
