i hooked up my msd 6al the same way it says in the how-to but it doesnt work. i had a friend test it in his GTO and the unit does work. some other members told me other ways to hook it up but still nothing. i have an 88 lx engine in my 89 lx if it matters. any help?

did you make sure you connected properly?
i don't think you can screw up that connection. you only have to connect 4 wires plus ground and positive.
tell us what wires you connected to what?

Instead of starting my own thread I'll jack this one.

When I bought my car it already had an MSD ignition box and coil. It's all cool except that the tach doesn't work. So where do I start?

I imagine I have to find the wire from the tach and connect it to the coil?

if the 6al requires an external coil then the stock tach should work fine. There should be a blue wire for the tach but I can't remember right now where the wire comes from, i'll try and get a pic

as for the box not working you can test it by putting the ignition wire near a ground and then tap the magnetic distributor pickup wires together, it should spark every time they touch. If no spark double check your wiring. If there is a spark it probably has the pickups hooked up wrong to the distrib.

Doh! Apparently, all the wiring is presently held together with electrical tape, and the blue wire had fallen off. For reference, I'm using an MSD coil, and there are two blue wires connected to on white wire. one of the blues goes to the distributor (ground?) and another goes underneath the fuse box somewhere. Now I'm off to the hardware store to get some real connectors.

white is a points pickup, you can't use both at the same time. Plus the distributor should have a magnetic pickup signal but I don't remember right now which is which, download the shop manual

the magnetic pickup wires are violet on my Blaster
