Just wondering, how many people would be interested in a mod like this? I'm in the process of locating a 55A relay to build the circuit. Already have the button and the space for it beside my cruise control button. I'll also consider wiring an LED beside it to light up either when the button is held down or when it's ready to be started with the button (the latter would be slightly harder). I would also need to wire a kill switch in case this blows up in my face.

For reference, the switch is Radio Shack part # 275-0618 and the LED is 276-0209. I'll hopefully finish the project by next weekend so I can post pics/schematics.

nice idea. I myself don't perfer push starters, but it sound like you really want to and thats awsome. i was wondering however, if your going through the ignition circuit so you still need the key..i'm assuming you are otherwise..your giving your car away and you don't sound dumb enough to do that, lol :-D

if you want that led to work, wire a step down circuit off a 12+v acc and run it through a fuse. or..are you talking its only on when ready and it turns off when its running?

:D yes I'm wiring the relay so it doesnt activate unless the key is turned :D

I'll probably just make the LED light while the button is actually being held down. LED is 12v so there shouldn't be any problems putting it on the relay.

As for my reasoning behind this mod, well, I'm just bored and I want something that most cars don't have. I'm also working on a SUPER SECRET mod which will be completed hopefully in a month.

nice man, originality is key!

12v LED? nice i've never bought an LED anything for my car but i think i'd be right to assume they're all for 12v right?

super secret mod ehhh......

Most LEDs are 5v. I went 12v since everything in the car basically runs at 12. I also wanted to get a flashing LED for a fake security system but my store doesn't carry them in 12v.

Yes super secret mod... It won't cost very much to do (guesses at $60-70 cdn) and it will be VERY unique. I don't know ANYONE with this mod on a 3g. I take risks in doing it before you guys evaluate the idea but I don't think it'll cause any problems.

yeah i knew most were at 5v thats why i suggested the step down circuit...

anyway good luck with your secret mod!!

Was easier just using a relay to keep the high amperage from turning my button into liquid. The switch and LED will both run at 12v so no need to mess with that.

I have high hopes for the secret mod. I'll need a mechanic to do some of the work I think (I would ask here to clarify some of this but I can't give away clues! :D)

lol so its an engine mod eh....what else

:D

Actually nope. The mod is mostly for appearance and the "wtf?" factor of people looking at it. I don't anticipate any performance difference.

I'd be interested in a push button starter - not sure why, though. I try to keep my interest to performance only. This just sounds cool. Go for it. If you can get it to work and write up a how to, or better yet just sell a kit, then I'll do it too.

netfreak
08-09-2002, 08:42 PM
Sure. If the parts are hard to find in your area, I can just sell a kit I guess. The relay is the last piece I need and that will be bought next friday so hopefully it'll work out.

is this SUPER mod expected to take a month...or are you just waiting a month for things to clear up?????

netfreak

Just waiting for the funds and the time. I'll need about 2-3 days off work to get the parts I need and then to get a mechanic to do the finishing touches.

hehehe push button starter is ghetto man. have fun. when i have my key on second, i dont mind turning it a notch to start the car. but, its one heck of a nice mod though. we built a F1 car in our garage in our college for the SAE meet and i saw the push button starter, its niceeeeeee as hell. good luck buddy. have fun.

Whoa, I know that people are going retro with their cars these days, but this is going WAY back. We have the resurrection of the VW Bug, Austin Mini, Ford Thunderbird, and now we are back to the push-button starters. I believe the last cars to have that were produced in the late 40's to early 50's. :D

if you want to use a 5v or 3.5v led that flashes, you can just use a resistor to allow to power it with a 12v source! :)

read some "baybus" guides for computers, it should tell you which specific resistor is needed. www.fanbus.com

i dont think so. the S 2000 has a push button start. and you can ge a real push button switch that doesnt require a relay on the internet at

I'm considering installing a engine start button on my 3g. Honda wants 30 dollars for the S2000 'engine start' button. Also, how-to's for some cars are already on the net. Shouldn't be a hard mod to do.

Whoever does it first needs to post a how-to for the 3geez.

The last time that ALL production cars had the push-button starter was the 40's.

I decided to go with a button from Radio Shack because it only cost me $2 cdn, and I can build the whole thing relatively cheap. Didn't want to fuss with shipping buttons from across the continent when I have good ones local.

I think since you are doing the start button you should make it a super secret start button. That's right. Disable the start function on the key, IOW remove the starter circuit from the switch. Have it so the key switch turns on ignition and then you have to press the super secret start button to activate the starter. Then let people decide where they want to hide the super secret start button. I think I might wire mine to the vanity light switch in the headboard. Get in car, turn key to ON, and then turn vanity light ON, Bingo, car starts. Who would have guessed you had to do that? Remember, it is a super secret.

But then you don't get the enjoyment of having a nice red button labelled "ZOOM"... You could also put a switch on the circuit and hide it somewhere for added security.

people been putting just a toggle switch and a button to replace a bad key switch for many years.Toggle must be on then hit button to start, to shut down toggle off.

This project can be done with a simple 30amp Bosch type relay or with a switch that's rated at delivering more than 30amps.

RELAY
terminal 85 - ignition- black/yellow (+)
terminal 86 - switch (-) [ other side of switch to ground]
terminal 30 - ignition - black/yellow (+) or constant white (+)
terminal 87a - not used
terminal 87 - to starter wire black/white

or you could substitute terminal 85 to the brake (+) which I think is green/white, that way the button will only work if you step on the brake.

Yeah. the relay is the last piece that I don't have yet. I'll be picking one up on friday or the weekend probably.

So have you installed the push-button starter yet?

netfreak
08-20-2002, 04:51 PM
Ahhh unfortunately not. My last paycheck drained into my debts rather quickly. The way things are going I might be able to pick up the relay next pay day (next week).

BTW someone mentioned a 30A relay? Doesn't the starter circuit run at 55?

k, the wire at the ignition is not 55 amps. I doubt it would even be fifteen amps. At the shop we use 30 amp relays all the time for all of our command starts. When we run out of 30's sometimes we have to use the 15's, and those work fine.

a 30amp Bosche will do just fine... and it only costs a couple bucks.

You're sure? Hmm maybe I read my Haynes wrong or something but I could have sworn it said 55A.

Well the last two items I need are the relay and the kill switch in case something melts... Next payday it'll be done.

Bought a 30A relay yesterday but I forgot to buy a kill switch.. I'll have to see what my cash reserve is at before I buy the rest.

Any new news on this? Did you complete the push-button starter?

netfreak
09-20-2002, 03:17 PM
The guy who was going to build it for me is really lazy, but I have all the parts I need. There's a good chance I'll be doing it tomorrow because I'm visiting that guy to drop off computers.

Have you made any progress on this? I'm interested in a how-to on a push button starter. Thanks!

netfreak
11-07-2002, 12:05 PM
Sorry! I pretty much decided that I won't be doing it until i find a spare car first. I had a dispute with the guy who would have done the wiring so now I'll probably have to do it myself, and I won't do it until my car is garaged for the winter (in case i screw something up). This also gives me the opportunity to find better push-button switches than the one i bought. When it's all completed, I will have a howto/pics.

All you have to do is read my post from about 2 months ago and it will tell you how to do it. One of the most simplest circuits possible with a relay.
