Pulled the alternator out on my 88 LXI to check brushes (while I had all belts off to replace timing belt) and they are less than the recommended 1/4".
My question is - how do I replace them? I have the brush holder out of the alt. I know I can buy the whole brush holder but to just replace the brushes?Looks like I melt the solder on the brush wire but how do the brushes come out of the holder?
I couldn't find any help searching here.
thanks
mike

you got it right on. that's exactly how you do it.

service limit on the brishes is 5.5mm, and standard(new)is 10.5 mm.

hope this helps you out.

So the brushes must "snap" out of the holder? I tugged on them a bit with no luck....
thanks

After a closer look - it appears that the wire actually keeps the brushes from popping out of the holder.
I'll fire up the solderin iron when I get home and see how it goes.

don't lose the spring when you remove hte brushes :D

And yes, they are held by the wire.
