weird sound comming from speakers

Hi, im new here and this is my first post, but I got a question:

im fixing a 89 accord SE-I and the HU doesnt work but, a squeaking noise is comming out of the speakers. Does that mean the speakers are dead or the HU doesnt work. Its a stock Bose system that has a stock head unit. Also can any aftermarket unit work or do I need to get a stock one?

It could be a problem with the amp... the bose systems in the se-i's have a factory amp for all the speakers it is on the bottom or your rear shelf.

You can put any aftermarket HU in, but you will need to rewire the speakers as to bypass the factory amp.
