View Full Version : retaining carb heat function for the winter with the scoop

ok i have found a way to retain the hot air function for the carb in the winter,what i am doing is mounting a small transmission oil cooler under the scoop,this will have coolant that flows through it to heat the air that is going into the filter,this coolant will be controlled by a vaccume operated water valve i need to source from the junkyard. i have retained my hot air door controls in my new intake system. instead of them operating the air door they will operate the coolant water valve and regulate air intake temp just like before. this system is able to be switched by a solonoid valve i have installed and will be controlled by a switch. that way it can be shut down when i want.

Ok i started over and scrapped the first idea,too many technical glitches to work out. i've gone back to hot air like original. I took some pictures,basically what i did was add a hot air opening to the aircleaner, it will have a remote heat valve,that will be controlled from the original air door controls. actually it is the original heat door cut off and modified just a little bit. just a little. the air cleaner is divided into two sections sealed off from each other that causes the lower section to pull a slight vaccume which wil pull hot air up the tube. the upper section of course pulls air from the scoop. the main difference will be i can switch off the system with a solonoid valve. unlike the factory system which provides 100 degree air to the carb year around. this will also switch off the efe plate and i will install a solonoid valve to turn off coolant going through the carb. when it's on it operates just like factory. http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b205/moultriemanicmechanic/MyPictures_00001.jpg

all right the project is coming along,here are a few more pictures,the original air snorkel from the air cleaner has been modified extensivly,it will now mount to the shroud on the exaust manifold directly, and hot air will be ducted to the intake. it's hard to see in the pic,but one end has been blocked with an aluminum plug, the metal around the output tube hasn't been put in yet, the tube is tacked in place right now, the original input tube was cut off the bottom of the snorkel and a stainless steel flared piece was put in. this will weld directly to the shroud. this operates just like the original with the exception of not blocking off the cold air,it just mixes hot air in to warm it. I had to do a lot of metal work to the shroud to make this work,I will get pics of that tomorrow when it's cool enough to remove. it still needs spacers welded to it. the original tube attached to it was removed by drilling out the spot welds.

ran into one problem,I need to move the drivers side cooling fan about an inch to that side,so the heat door motor will fit. shouldn't be too bad,I just need to make some brackets to move it.

ok I got some more pics, this is on my old mockup manifold,thats why there is a hole on one side of the shroud,the o2 sensor is moved to down near the bottom. I put a pic of the exaust manifold on here,I'm really suprised at that ceramic coat paint, it's only peeling at the very top near the head. when i took off the shroud it was almost still perfect,even after a couple of years.

thanks for looking it def doesn't like the cold weather. I've still got to free up the door a bit then i can weld it to the manifold shroud. the actual heat valve part is done,just needs to be straightened a bit. all the gose brackets are in and i test fit the hose.

well got some more done,I'm ready to attach the heat door assembly to the manifold, as soon as i move the fan,fun huh? I made the carb heat pull switch knobs today, it will install where the factory power antenna switch would go. in the center console. Would like to get y'all opinion, I made two knobs, one all aluminum,and one black with an aluminum insert. which one do you think looks best?

aluminum insert one looks stock, kinda, the all aluminum one looks, well tacky IMO but i dunno i'd take the insert if i had a choice.

looks kinda wierd did you put a header on it and lose the warm air tube to the intake?

na it's a dx,the entire intake system is custom,I don't have the factory heat tube anymore,thats why i'm building the heat door assembly like i am, so i have the option of getting some hot air to the carb in this cold weather. thats a factory manifold on there.
