Ok, so i got my car completely paid off and now my parents don't want to sign over the title to me. They claim that if i get the title in my name, my insurance will skyrocket because i'm 17.

Is this true? Because it really pisses me off to think that there is a difference having my name on the title.

Yes its true, im the "secondary driver" on my car, and insurance still went from $50 to $180 a month on it from my mom/dad being on it, to adding me. The insurance company said if we put the title in my name, liability would be $250/month... its those select few punk ass kids that wreck/get mad speeding tickets that kill it for the rest of us.

why is it such a big deal? leave it in thier name, but make it VERY VERY CLEAR that it is YOUR car. when i bought my first car, we had to put it in my name because my parents' car insurance company required them to insure all of the vehicles they had on one policy, and if i were a driver on any one of them, even mine with liability only, the insurance would have went up over $2500 every 6 months. right now, i'm paying $80 a month for liability only on my 92 hardbody. i'm 19 and have held my license for just over a year.

it helps that i have no accidents on record, nor any tickets on record.

just keep the title in thier name. it's not really a big deal.

Yeah, your insurance is going to be high if you put it in you name & take out insurance on you own. Leave it in your parents name, let them pay the premium untill you make enough money to afford it. Your insurance will run you from a bill plus at that age.
*edit* I'm sure your parents want you to have the title in you name, just looking out for you.

Well, it really is a big deal, because my step dad, my mom, and my own name is on the title.

They keep using the excuse that it's their car also, which really pisses me off because i worked hard to get this car. Such as when i wanted to trade my car or sell my car at one point, they wouldn't let me because it was also their car...

But thanks for the info, right now i'm paying 65/month for liability... and i'm just 17, so i guess i should consider myself lucky.
