the 1997, Honda , Accord , EX dose have vtec that came with a 2.2 Liter 16 Valve 4 Cylinder VTEC SOHC Engine-Electronic Fuel Injection
the EX was the only trim level to have vtech in it

the first year that the accord came out with vtec was in 1995
ENGINE TYPE: 2.2Liter 16Valve 145hp SOHC 4Cyl VTEC - Multi-point Programmed Fuel Injection

the b16 was the first vtec, 1989 jdm civic/crx type r. It also has the best rod stroke ratio of just about any honda engine, at 1.74:1...the a20 is a joke, 1.5:1...
I don't know about the accord vtec..but if it's not an h22, I don't care either..

nah well both you guys have it kinda pin pointed. the first usdm vtec engine was in a 1990 nsx. but a year before that, in 1989, honda debute it's first ever vtec engine in japan sitting in the engine bay of a da6 honda integra RSi/XSi using the b16a engine.

but read the thread title, we're all off on a tangent here.

First Accord VTEC = 1994 EX. SOHC VTEC, 150 HP.

Even JDM is the same with the 1994 SiR DOHC VTEC.

Honda first introduced the DOHC VTEC mechanism in the US on the 1990 Acura NSX. But a year earlier in 1989, the Japan Domestic Market got the world's first dose of DOHC VTEC in the 1989-1993 generation of the Honda Integra. The 1989 DA6 Honda Integra RSi/XSi used a 160ps variant of the B16A DOHC VTEC engine. Honda enthusiasts would recongnize the B16A engine since it is currently used in the 1999 and 2000 US-spec Civic Si and Canada-spec Civic SiR. However the B16A used in the current Civics is a second version of the original B16A. The main difference is that the newer US-spec B16A has slightly more power at 160hp. (found on the net)...Im using the last batch of DA6 B16A1(1991)...but some said mine is B16A2 since its a Big V...10hp more than first gen B16A1 Small V....for accord...i love the Accord CD6 came stock with H22A Dohc VTEC...sweet..

hmmmmmmmm..here in Canada,no EX accord has vtec..only EX-r models do...hmm what about the 94's..or the v6 models..in the 94-95 accords..i think they have vtec..but i'm not 100% sure..
or at least here in Canada..i'm not sure about the US though

The question of thread is which Accord had VTEC first, not the history of VTEC, or which motor was was the first VTEC, but which ACCORD had it first.

3rd Gen, your Canada EX is our LX, that's why it's not VTEC. However, regardless of the country, 1994 was the first model year for any VTEC Accord. Whehter it's USDM EX, the Euro 2.2i-Exc, or the JDM SiR, the CD was the first Accord.

And the US spec B16A is not the strongest. And JDM OBD1 or OBD2 B16A has 170 HP. That "more powerful" 160 HP is where the B16A started off in power, 150 if the car was JDM automatic, or made for Europe (EE9,EE8 1.6i-VT).

And again, no JDM motor is a B16A1. If the block is stamped B16A1, its from from a Euro EE9 or EE8, and has 150 HP.

Any JDM first gen or second gen motor is going to say B16A, whether it's a EF8, EF9, DA6, or DA8, EG2, EG9, EG6, EK4, they all say B16A.

The motors that say B16A2 are the Euro OBD1 (92-95 EG6/EG2) and USDM OBD2 (96-97 EG2) (99-00 EM1)

If this doesn't spell it out for everyone, search my posts, I save every topic like this.

Lastly satanic if you show ME a motor pic, I'll tell you which one it is.

SataniC has done his homework. the integra engine he speaks of was the first in a regular car after being researched and enginered. anyway, i'd like to see a nice history of honda's Vtec and how it came to be. like what engines it was used in, something detailed. and how lotus and other companies came to use the technology later on.

asone diego....here i thought the B16A1 or B16A2 is like a batch number....hahahaha sorta like version 1 and version 2....dumb of me... :P

LET THIS FUCKING THREAD DIE!!!!!!!!!!!

"The VTEC system was originally introduced as a DOHC system in the 1989 Honda Integra sold in Japan, which used a 160HP variant of the B16A engine. The US market saw the first VTEC system with the introduction of the 1990 Acura NSX, which used a DOHC V6."
