your door wont close properly. if you look on the actual door around that area there should be something that resembles two big bolts. those are supposed to line up with your "shims" so the door will close properly and so you wont have a hanging door when its closed.

Actually, I'm pretty sure those are for the seatbelt in the door thing.
They lock together when the door is shut, so if any accident occurs they help to hold the seat belt locked.
I wouldn't mess with them if you value your life!
