What is a safe area for a auto. to shift at. I usually let it go up to around 4k before I let it shift. is this safe.

yes... 6,000 is safe as long as you have your engine tuned good

just don't got above more than about 4,500 too often

Dude its safe to go over 5k to 6 k on a regular basis. Only difference is that the car after a while of fast driving will get ambitious and have a little higher iddle which results in car accelerating without pressing the gas. Noting to bad.. just a slow accelaration to 10 mph.

You know like when you hold down on the gas and press down so far that the rpm's just keep on climing, untill you let off the gas a bit.

so in an auto you need to leave the gas a bit to shift ! ???

do'nt worry man, i understand. the more gas the higher the rpms the later the shift.

Its good to take it up to redline here and there, it does help clean out hte motor. Ever notice how much nicer the car shifts when you take it over 4,000 RPM (Or at least thats the way it is on my CRX)

well, the norm. range for an auto to shift at is 2-3k rpm, if ur racing, the car will prolly end up shiftin near 5-6k. but for norm. driving it should be around 3k rpm. this can also depend on your idle rpm. my uncles 89 lx, (which i suspect was raced all the time b4 he bought it) had a idle of 2k rpm, and shifted norm at 3500 to 5k. the motor was stock, but in bad cond.

ya I do the same thing with my auto... if you slam it down and keep it floored it will go all the way to 6000 before it forces it self to shift... after a while of driving you can almost make it shift exactly where you want it to... you just let off the gas a little... it's like that in every auto though... I do it in my dads 98 accord and is my sisters 01 civic... one thing I just learned though is while I'm racing.. you let it shift into 4th and have it climb to about 3000 rpms... let your foot off the gas a little and drop it into 3rd while slamming the gas down... I guess it's a way to pop the clutch only with an auto... it may sound like bs but it gives you a serious boost... a friend of mine raced me in his 97 accord ... (the ex vtec 145hp version)... we were even and he gained a good car length on me by doing it.. so after I asked him what he did and .. there ya have it...

Hmmm my 89 lx likes to iddle around 2k alot. Does that mean it has been raced a lot in the past? I've driven these cars more than long enough to control what RPM it's at during idle or shifting but i was just wondering. It's not uncommon for the damn thing to idle at or a little over 3k some times, expesially in the winter. Of course it came from florida and i live in missouri so it really hates our humid summers and 20 or 30 below winters (it REALLY, REALLY, REALLY hates the winters).
