Unsprung Weight

Unsprung weight is the weight of all the components not supported by the car’s suspension. This usually includes: wheels, tires, brakes, uprights, bearings, and the shock or strut assembly plus part of weight of control arms and axle. Lower unsprung weight makes it easier for the suspension to keep the tire in contact with the road over uneven surfaces. The weight of wheels and tires is especially important because it not only contributes to unsprung weight, but it also rotates. Reducing rotating mass improves acceleration and reduces the load on brakes.

Wheel Offset
Offset measures the distance between the surface of the wheel that mounts to the hub to the vertical centerline of the wheel.
http://www.tirerack.com/wheels/tech/techpage.jsp?techid=101

This site is useful if you want to find out something specific.
www.wheelspecs.com (http://www.wheelspecs.com)

Many tire weights are available at tirerack under the ‘specs’ button for each tire in each size

Wheel and Tires Sizes

OEM Wheels
Stock 14”x5.5” 45 mm offset 4 x 100 mm bolt pattern
88-89 OEM 14" alloy wheels weigh 17.1 lbs (thanks CAH)
Stock 13”x5.5” 4 x 100 mm bolt pattern
Civic and Integra wheels fit
13" wheels do not fit on 88-89 fuel injected cars because of the larger front brakes

Tire diameter calculator
http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html
...or do it yourself
(wheel diameter [inches])+2*(aspect ratio)*(section width [mm])*(1/25.4)
example: 195-60R14: 14+2*0.60*195*(1/25.4)=23.12”

The exact outer diameter can be found for a specific tire using the revs/mile data available on tirerack:
diameter = (5280*12)/((rev/mile)*3.1415926)

Tire sizes (use offset 40-45 mm wheels; slightly lower offsets may work in some situations)
FORMAT [outer diameter] [ratio to stock]
Stock (for diameter comparison)
185/70-13 23.20” 100.0%
195/60-14 23.21” 100.0%
+1
195/55-15 23.44” 100.1%
205/50-15 23.07” 99.4%
195/50-15 22.68” 97.7%
+2
215/45-16 23.62” 101.8%
205/45-16 23.26” 100.2%
205/40-16 22.46” 96.8%
+3
215/40-17 23.77” 102.4%
205/40-17 23.46” 101.1%
+4
215/35-18 23.93” 103.1%

I do not expect any 19" or larger wheels to fit.

Going to a diameter smaller than stock will slightly improve acceleration at the cost of a small reduction in fuel economy and a speedometer that reads a little higher. The vehicle center of gravity is also lowered slightly with smaller diameter tires. This will tend to slightly improve cornering grip. Obviously the opposite is true for tires with a larger outer diameter.

Maximum size
215 width fits with 45 mm offset wheels
225 width fits with 40 mm offset wheels
195/70R14fits at stock height (outer diameter 24.75” 106.6% stock)

This site has a good deal of tire information--some basic some more advanced

Bolt pattern
These cars share the 4 x 100 mm bolt pattern that all 86-89 Accord have
The bore size and offset may not be correct though.

what is the stock 13x5.5 wheel offset?

is it the same as the 14x5.5 - +45

I still have the 17 * 7 wheels with 45 offset and 215/45/17 tyres from my 6th gen. I would like to change the tyres to 215/40/17 and fit them to my 3G.
Will it still be ok to lower my car by 1.5" when I have those mags/tyres on?

im not sure....i have 195-60-15 and if i get any wider tire i will rub in the back wheels

thx did u have any mechanical problems from running that size wheel

i think the only prob i see is that the speedo of the car will be off by a lil bit when it reads 60...you will be going 60.6mph

Thanks! Can someone explain the offset for me. It says in the first post to have a minimum of +40 offsett up to +45. So the way I'm thinking, the inside of the wheel (where it mounts to the hub) with the smaller offset (lets say +38) will have the wheel stick out more towards the outside of the fender? Is that what will happen with the smaller offset depending on the tire size?

I'm asking because I see alot of wheels for sale but the offset is +38 or +37. They are mostly for the civics and integras. The offsets for the accords don't come to often.

BINGO!

you can run a bigger offset, but you may have roll your fenders or camber your your suspension so that it tucks up into the wheel well. Some people say camber will wear the tires real fast, others say that camber is ok and it is toe that eats tires.

for reference, I am running 15x6.5 rims w/ 36mm offset and 205/50/15 tires. No rubbing, no fenders rolled and not cambered to all hell.

Had 2008 Honda Fit wheels on my 1987 Acura Integra, which resembles the 87 Accord LX-i Hatchbacks, and they looked great on it!

Yes, theoretically you could go all the way up to 20" wheels, but who would do that to a 3gee lol. 14s or 15s would be an excellent upgrade for the car.

I have 205/55/16 on the LX and they rub inside the top of the well in the rear on any jousts, bumps, or diagonaly traversing my driveway. Got a little rubbing on the fuel filler tubes as well, so my question is are 205/45/16 a huge difference?
That size was recommended but I have to order the tires unseen.

That is pretty cool!
Im still a little worried but it does look like it would clear better but it's a crap shoot if it will still bottom out with weight in the car. I can get a bfh and work on the inside top some if not.

I confirm that either 205/45 R16 or 50 profile will work fine have had both on my car 45 gives you the exact same circumference as stock on a 16" if 55's are rubbing I would suggest the shocks are not doing too well :-)

14” civic steelies (unknown offset until I take them off) work with 195/75r14. Probably a 5.5” wide rim. I might know the offset soon when I take them off to try some 15x8’s at +36 with 205/55 if not 205/50

Also the DeLorean has a 4x100 bolt pattern😉
