My 87 LX is dripping coolant from behind the crankshaft pulley-there seems to be a black spacer in there-and I am curious as to what it involves to replace the seal(or seals) there. I can't do it myself and am wondering how much it may cost and how many hours. I know the timing belt, etc. is on the pulley. No oil loss, which confuses me. Thanks for your opinions.

Coolant coming from the crank pully seal?
Or do you mean from benind the Lower timing belt cover ?

It shouldn't do that unless there was a hole in you block or head gasket.

Are you sure it's not the waterpump leaking?

its most likely your water pump, because when the bearing is wearing out, it starts to leak, giving you a sign that you need to change the water pump, it also drips down, so most likely you need to replace the water pump

Here is a how-to on water pump replacement.

the water pump doesnt leak unless the engine is running, and the coolant drys up pretty quickly after it drips, it may drip a bit after its cool but not alot

Check for the spray on the underside of the hood... normally bay pumps like to spew out water and it dries and leaves a residue on the hood about where the pump is.

The Lower timing belt cover requires that you remove the crank pully...

That is the most troublesome aspect of the whole process of changing the T-Belt or anything else behind that cover.

dunno if this could be it, but its worth a try. notice the hose that i'm pointing to in the pic. dunno if that could be it but was my guess. if you cant see that pic click the link for a bigger one.

I screwed up, the o-rings were on the oil pump. Would it have any coolant around it?

Please tell me how that dial in fuel pressure regulator is holding up... I tired one years ago and got incredible perforamance from it. Very strong acceleration and pull up untill it locked up on me at 3,600 rpm or so and then drained the float bowl.

I'm sure I installed it right... is there anyting different you did?

i dunno, its a Mr. Gasket one, there were others but this one was pretty good quality. also, the other brands, the threads on all 3 i tried out were F'ed. now for the pressure gauge, its all eaten up as you can see and quit working soon after installing it. the pressure regualtor seems to work alright, i really dont know if it does much for performance. keeps the idle steadier than it used to be though, just slightly. i'm going to get a new gauge when i redo the air cleaner.

I'm surprised it hasn't helped in the way it did with mine, but I was more interested if it locked up on you at all.

I had a cheap o' pressure dial once, it always read 2.1 psi and shook as the engine vibrated.

Mine must have been a fluke, it made it feel like I had an extra 4 cylinders under the hood. Mine was from 'Spectre' There would be a big build up of pressure before the reg when it locked up and I could remove the fuel line from the carb and no fuel would come out. After removing the unit a relieving the pressure it would work fine again till 3,600 rpm... I'm not sure if too much pressure locks it up or maybe my pump called it quits each time.

I'll try again when I get the change... I have two of them laying around cause I thought the first one I bought was broken and the goins I got was well worth it if the other one didn't lock up, but not luck.

:(

I could have been something I did. I've found simmilar faulty flow connections on my CO2 powered paintball gun from overtightening fittings to the point the enter the internal passages and start blocking off flow.

I've had both the Mr Gasket and the Spectre, they're both pieces of crap. They also look exactly alike.

heh, we've jacked this thread. i'm probley gonna get a much better pressure regulator when and if i get a weber put on. i'll probley end up doing a lot of stuff.
