Since finding this forum, I have a renewed interest in my car that I have not had in 15 years.
My '88 Accord LX was purchased new by my father (DEC '87). When the car was about 6 mos. old, it was stolen and subsequently vandalized. At this point, the future of this 3g was uncertain. Ultimately, it was decided the car would NOT be fixed. Every panel on the car had damage, the interior was thrashed, and the radio was missing. This didn't matter because the car was still mechanically perfect. A few years later, I acquired the Honda (at 48k).
I needed the car at the time and the price was right. Through the years the car came to be known as the "Super Honda";this name was earned when 300k miles arrived... Then, the unexpected...400k miles and no sign of slowing!
Anyway, at 458,172 miles the "Super Honda" is starting to show its age.
It has that annoying, fu<k'd up cold idle problem with the carb (pardon my French) and there was a "DNR" clause until I found this forum. Because of the support and technical knowledge of its members I have decided to make a run
for 500,000 miles. Should happen in 1.5 years.

ya the million k 3gee.... thats metric not imperial mesurment so hes not that far from the million k 3gee..... only 200k mils from where were at keep your car going strong. no rust from what i can see so its probly got another 20 years left in her even with the dents. even if the motor dies you can just swap it lol
manual tran or auto????

i say go for it. these cars are tough and dont die young. i and many other members have that really annoying cold start problem. in my case, ill start the car and have to keep the rpm's high so it doesnt putter and flood, choking the engine to a stop. it always start up thats for sure. i'm thinking of converting to a manual choke. i only have the problem in the winter though so its not a huge problem for me, our winters arent much of anything.

Nobody has a million mile 3gee. There is a million kilometer 3gee though. The tach looks sweet and 500,000 would look even sweeter. Do a20's ever die?
I had a cold start problem as well, almost like fuel wasnt getting to one of the cylinders until higher RPM, and it only happened the first time the car started of the day, never after the first start though.

1ajs, My Honda has a manual trans(original)- second clutch.
I live about 50 yards from the ocean so the salt has taken its toll. There are 2-3" rust bubbles all over the car. Every morning, there is a thick film of salt covering everything. I even see sand inside the air cleaner box from time to time. The beach is a harsh enviornment on cars too.http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/6857/00001884ul.th.jpg (http://img221.imageshack.us/my.php?image=00001884ul.jpg)

.... having trouble posting sorry if you see this twice.

I have only replaced the usual things: 2 alternaters, 4 axles I think, 2 catalytic converters, 1 clutch, 1 left whl bearing, front brake hoses, 1 radiator, can't remember what else.

No engine work yet. The car idles rough from low and uneven compression.

trans still works great

I have 270k miles, I thought for sure I'd get 350k on the original motor, but I blew a coolant hose on the twisty mtn rd I live on and didn't notice the temp until it died as I turned into my driveway, so I'm on the second motor looking for around 400k....
