Wife runs the '88 LX 3 qts low on oil, and 1 full gallon low on coolant. Starts blowing white smoke like mad (gee, I can't imagine WHY) so I figure she blew the head gasket.
Pull the gasket off, new one on (after cleaning the head/engine gasket surfaces). Now, the old gasket, I can't find anything obviously blown - red flags went up.
Still blowing MASSIVE amounts of white smoke. Now I'm leaning toward a cracked head.
:(
Anyone in the Central Florida area happen to have a spare head or motor? :(

Might be cracked head , but from the amount of heat that was produced from not having proper lubricant/coolant level -fried rings, blown piston, burnt bearings=increased oil clearances, valve guides......But when the car is ran like it was the possibilities are almost endless of what could go wrong.

How long/far did she drive the car that also will be a big factor in your diagnosis.

Why didn't you get the head checked??? Did you resurface the head, it might just be warped.......

My Haynes manual called for 49 lbs/ft of tq on the head bolts (in the proper criss-cross order) but I went to 53 lbs/ft :)

I'm going to go do some more diagnosis today... I looked over the head, but found no cracks anywhere.

If you did'nt use the same criss-cross pattern when unbolting the head, starting in 1/4 turn increments. The head will warp on you.
I can't stress how much it's a good investment to have the head re-built once you pull it off.
