So i got this crazy idea that i wanted to paint my hood.... probably due to the surface rust in an area and the peeling paint/clearcoat. it came out alright, but I think i could do better when i end up doing it again.

Before:

After:

sorry for the crappy photo, but it's the best i could get with the light i had.

yea looks good,I'm really suprised at the quality of the new spray paints that are out. if you want to do yours they do make the self etch in a can now,it'll give you a good solid primer to g under your paint. plus it won't allow rust to creep back in.

Deadhead

hahhaah, yes it's a rattle can.

cost me 2 bucks a can at wal-mart.

then duplicolor clear coat.

I don't know if you know much about wet sanding, but you can wet sand it with like 1000-1500 grit sandpaper to get rid of the orange peel & then buff it with some quality polish finisher.

Deadhead
01-16-2006, 05:59 PM
yeah, i was going to wet sand it with 2000 grit paper.

what polish finisher would you recommend?

I'm not sure of the name of what I seen used. I'll get back with you on that tomm., but you can call a automotive paint supplier & they'll give you some insight on what is good stuff they sell.

Biggest guys that I know for the polisher/rubbing compound is 3m there are others but that's what my paint supplier recommends. Just be very careful w/ the rubbing compound depending on the grit level of it. Looks good though just get some pics out in the day :)

well, after looking at it in the garage, i dont know if i want to take a pic of it in the day.... i think it's going to look terrible lol. The clear coat made some lines....which is wierd.... i thought the paint would do more of that.... oh well.

what brand did you use? the duplicolr rattlecans are pretty good if you prep the surface right first.I wouldn't trust anything in a can that says walmart

I eat some can food that is made by Wal-Mart (Great Value), haven't had no problems yet...

Enough of the funny.

Anyhow, that 3M polisher as mentioned is the stuff to use, just watch the grit. There is a buffing pad you can use that looks like a sponge. Not sure where you get them at. It mounts on a drill. I think it is better that the clothe ones.

well, it didn't have walmart on it other than the sticker for the scanner thingy.

some other brand which i can't remember, I used it on the trim around the 1/4 hatch windows, you know, the one's that fade. it's been on there for a while, and it looks great.

The duplicolor actually made some line's go down the way i was spraying, i'm not to happy about it.

as for prep work, i cleaned the surface, and sanded it down for a while with 2k grit sand paper just to roughen it up a little bit. then cleaned the surface again...

and then paint, it's probably going to not stay on for a long time i know, but it's something to keep it from rusting.

ya that self etch is a duplicor brand that what you put over bare metal,it etches into the metal and protects it from rust. I use a lot of the duplicolr bumper coating,it's really good, thats what i di my bumpers with and am redoing my trim with.

the wool pads for the bufers are just for polishing "faster" the foam pads are nice but tend to leave more swirls unless there really cleaned good afterwards, for dark colors use a high grit compound like 3000k stuff that way it should be good with a rattle can clear job

yea hopefully next month i'l be able to get a gallon of high build primer and start primering stuff. got to do the other hatch and things like the hood and fenders. i'll try to at least get it one consistent color. I did finish painting the last wheel today, went to take it off and like :wtf: i somehow bent one lug stud. had to break it off had no choice. i'm planning on doing the wheel bearings and ball joints on the other spindles in a couple of weeks anyway. so thats less money for paint once again:gun:

...and i've got some coolant leaking slowly

I had the same problem, and used this : http://www.wynns.ca/pages/english/e_products_x-cool.html

It worked great, and stopped completely the leak.
It think it's worth the try, I payed mine 8$ here.

OK, it won't work if the problem is due to a bad gasket, but if it's due to the cooling system, it may be interesting to try...

By the way, good job for the hood repaint.
My repaint on my 1st gen CRX was really terrible ! Yours seems fine.
