hatch glass trim clips?

:help: :huh: ok has anyone on here actually replaced the glass in their hatch themselves? my autobody teacher has been teaching at this school since 1971,and even he's stumped as to how honda did this one. apparently all the trim clips have been installed to the glass before the glass was glued in place,therefor they all have to be destroyed to remove it.even the bottom trim strip is cliped to the glass and then the glass is glued in place sandwitching it between the metal and the glass. it's impossible to use a wire to cut the urthane becaue there is so much glass overlap on the outside,also the bottom trim strip is glued in place making it impossible to cut the urthane under it. I need to get the glass out so I can work on this hatch to get it ready to go on the car. any ideas i'm stumped. also anybody have a source for the clips other then the dealer? it's gona get expensive.

Well Tim, I havn't personally done a Accord hatch b/g, but I believe the clips you are talking about are actually installed in the molding, then put in when the urethane is wet.....thus making break when the trim is removed.
Now, you can simply use a razor knife to cut the clips so you can remove the trim, then you should be able to use a "cold knife" to cut it out. You can also use a pnumatic knife, that can get risky though.
I will see tomorrow if any clips are available from my glass distributors, and get an exploded view of the moldings if I can for ya.

actually i replaced my hatch glas in the last HB i had , the side trim un skrews off , the bottom moulding is scrwed on from the inside you need to take the interior hatch pannel off , the top is held by clips, the way the glass sits is that the bottom has a notch for it so unless ur replacing a broken peice of glass getting a good peice of glass out ill see if i got any picts wehn i installed the last glass

thanks i appreciate it,ya the top ones that hold on the big trim piece were already broken so i just cut them in half and pulled them out,the side ones that hold the trim screws for the side moldings are def glued in place so will need to be destroyed,I guess i'll have to cut up the bottom molding and get a new one,that seems to be the only way to get at the glue. My autobody teacher is really nervous about letting us use the windshield knife,understandably so,but i'm a very careful person and will take the proper precautions,gloves,safety glasses face shield. this is gonna be a bitch. I was hoping to be able to use piano wire and handles to cut it but with the overlap,no way. this hatch is from an 89 lxi by the way. it's going to be replacing the one on my 86 dx. in case anyone is wondering the reason the glass has to come out is that it has a huge dent right on the bodyline. I can take care of the dent no problem,but it may require some heat and i'm afraid i'll crack the glass. this is the only hatch i've ever found that is rust free, for some reason my car has no rust but the hatch on it is rusted out from the inside. i don't think it's the original hatch. probably from up nrth.

well this hatch is alread y stripped of everything that will come off. the bottom molding i'm talking about is actually three pieces,but it's clipped to the bottom of the glass,then the glass is set in the uerthane.so the the trim is trapped by the glass itself. the glass is glued all the way around,you can see it from the inside part of the glass.

well after finding out how much it will cost to replace all the clips and things that need to be destroyed in order to remove the glass to fix the dent,we have decided to fix the hatch already on the car. the main thing rusted are the pieces welded on the hatch that hold the bump stops,I drilled out the spot welds on the pieces on the other hatch and removed them,tomorrow i'll remove the rusted bump stops on my existing hatch and spot weld those on. I believe water got trapped in them somehow and caused them to rust from the inside out. then it's some minor rusted areas to fix. I believe this hatch may have originally come from the north due to the rust,the rest of the car is an atlanta car and has no rust whatsoever.

ok today on hatch overhaulin' ..........:)
ok i removed the rusted out hatch bumper by drilling out the spot welds and prying it loose

heres the hatch bumper from the other hatch I did the same thing and have bead blasted it and removed all of the seam sealer

heres the area where the bump stop welds to the hatch,it's actually solid metal underneath theres no opening the bump stop is just spot welded on the surface,this is all cleaned up ready for welding

ok the new corner bumper is on and the hatch is well on it's way to being fixed,got the new piece al welded in and covered in zinc primer today,that was the major issue with the hatch,now it's just some surface rust to fix,no big deal.
