I've been looking for headbolts everywhere. Seems like the only people that have them are the damn dealer.. :wtf:

measure the length and find out what thread is required. i doubt the stud dealers have a kit for our engines (or we'd know about it already) but there's nothing special about our head bolts and they can almost assuredly match them to an existing product. Why did i have to think of that?

I'm in the same situation. I'm just going to use my old head bolts. Just torque them about 5 lbs. tighter. Don't have time to burn, but damn new head bolts would be nice.

hmm, does anyone know the dimensions and thread pitch and shit of the stock ones so i can call arp and see if they can cross refrence some parts for me??

I'll find out tomm., cause I hate to use my old head bolts. Give me a little time. I'm thinking I can find some similar size head bolts from the parts house.

so im assuming that with the lack of suppliers for head bolts that our head bolts are not torque-to-fail, for some unknown reason i thought ours head boltd were, anybody know for sure?

I measure the bolt today. It is 4 1/4" from the end to the top behind the washer. The thread pattern is M-1.25

I gave up on trying to find some new head bolts. So I had to use my old ones. If you have your old ones, maybe measure the width of them. They must be made of some good stuff with so much trouble finding replacements.
I can't pull them out to help out anymore.

Do the head studs have the oil holes in them or were those different bolts... rocker assembly and such... I forget.

AWESOME!!! I ordered a set today! What did you torque them down too?

stock is 49 ft lbs, but from what i understand, u should tighten them like 70%, then 100%, then back them off to 70% again, and up to 100% one last time. also retorque them after a day or so of driving, and check them after a week. :)

<throwing this in there>

22 ft. lbs. on the first torque, 49 ft. lbs. on the second torque.

I started out with 5lbs over stock, but since I'm also running a copper head gasket, I went up to 10lbs over. Seems to be holding pretty good right there.

Damn.
How much boost are you running now? Heh.

None yet, but engine is built and operating. The copper gasket does not offer as much give, so more clamping force is required for a good seal.

They don't list part number though, so call to make sure. I'd check Mazda Miata sites too for leads.

I just want to say that the head bolts for the A20A1-A20A3 aren't TTY (torque to yeild) bolts like I thought they where. The torqueing senquence doesn't require a torque angle meter. These head bolts can be re-used unlike TTY bolts that require an angle meter (example-90 degree torque) after the final torque.

Edit- I personally would tighten the bolts to 55 foot lbs. on the second torque if re-using the head bolts. New head bolts/studs is a plus anytime you remove the head.

just an update on this thread. stock torque settings is 49 ft lbs.

for an arp assembly they reccomend 70 ft lbs, unless its an aluminum head (which it is) then they reccomend 65 ft/lbs while using arp lube, and slightly different amounts of tq if you are not using the arp assembly lube, but i dont remember that number off of the top of my head.

hey, ive seen some pictures of blocks with the studs screwed in them, how tight would we want to screw them into the block? does ARP have instructions on how to use those studs?

bobafett
08-23-2006, 07:47 PM
as tight as they go.... they run into metal so once they make contact there really isnt too far for them to go. i put mine on 'hand tight' fairly snugly with the long end of my allen wrench that fit. i couldnt tell you what kind of tq that was though. but you can feel it hit the metal, and it won't really budge much after that.

as for instructions its fairly straightforward, but from personal experience, CLEAN OUT THE HOLES IN YOUR BLOCK VERY CAREFULLY AND MAKE SURE DRY OUT ALL THE HOLES BEFORE YOU INSTALL THE STUDS. failure to do so will result in your studs not being seated properly and they will want to walk out. :( this is not a big deal unless you actually want your head to stay sealed... :)

After you clean out the bolt/stud holes & blow out with compressed air. Dip the bolts/studs (threads) in fresh engine oil before installing. That'll give you proper torque readings.

bobafett

be VERY careful doing that. i had water in the water jackets and it splashed everywhere and got the holes more wet than they were before. i actually cleaned out the holes with q-tips and it worked really well, but took a little while.
