Woodruff key behind crankshaft pulley

Has anyone had a woodruff key behind the crankshaft pulley when they removed the crankshaft pulley? I didn't notice one or didn't see it. I'm thinking I can go without it, but think I better get one. Anyone see it when they pulled the crankshaft pulley off?

that key is there on every singe crank,, and by the way ,,you CANNOT go without it...It will eventually make the pulley free spin on the crank..

Actually, if you put that bitch on with an impact, that SOB isn't going to loosen cause of the rotation of the engine & if it does. You didn't tighten it up enough. But I plan on putting a woodruff key in though.

Edit- That is why it is the tightest bolt on the whole car. The engine rotation tightens the crank bolt.

Yea it will work without that key, one of my old engines was running fine without it. But better safe than sorry

how did you guys get the nut off? I was trying to help my dad, and there was no way that bolt was coming off. I think we ended up breaking the socket.

I used a chain vice grip to hold the pulley, and then alternated between our impact wrench and our biggest ratchet (with a pipe on the end for more power). Everything also got a PB Blaster bath, but I don't know if that got in deep enough to help.

To get my crank bolt out we had a guy literally jumping on my breaker bar.. i thought for sure it would break... we did break my screwdriver (in two spots) but the crank bolt came out.... i didnt have a good enough impact gun at the time.

my impact works just fine at 90 psi... never had that big of a deal... although on old ass engines the pulleys themselves can be a bitch..

I had to take mine into the dealer and have them break it loose.
