headlight part # confusion

I think somebody maybe able to clear this up for me - about headlights.

I'm looking at the back of an ORIGINAL "1988 owner's manual" (I have a 86 LXi, but I assume there are no major differences) and it listed the headlight as H6052, rated 35W low beam and 65W high beam. However, many folks here in this forum mentioned H6054 (55w low / 65w high beam). I'm definitely not happy with the existing 35w low beam. In the meantime, I have a pair of cheap walmart driving lights (55w halogen) installed but I can immediately tell the difference of 35w vs 55w (compare with low beam and driving light on at the same time). The low beams are much dimmer compare to the 55w rated driving light. My questions are -

1) Is H6054 a direct fit? no mods required?
2) If I install H6054, will the 55w low beam overload the factory wiring, which was designed to work with 35w as in H6052 lights?

i never heard of H6052 light. must be something they made back in 80s.
Anyway, you can use H6054 lights. They won't overload your system at all.
If you want more light, consider Sylvania Sylverstar headlights. They are much brighter than stock headlights, and they won't overload the car circuit since they use same power rating.

I got the H6054 two-pack from walmart for $18 and they are brighter then any other ones i tried and don't overload anything. And replace both of them at the same time if possible.

So what is the brand of those walmart H6054 lights? I'm thinking about putting SilverStar but if there is a cheaper (but brighter) option, I'll check it out. Thanks.

trust me, there are no brighter and cheaper lights. Silverstar has the highest light output that is government approved. You can get H4 conversion kit. You will be able to use H4 light bulbs, but a lot of aftermarket light bulbs are not DOT approved.

I used to have Raybrig whitesonic H4 bulbs in my car http://store.racinglab.com/raywhitsonh4.html They are the whitest light bulbs i have ever seen. I went through 10 pairs of diff kind aftermarket light bulbs.
To use them, you will need to get H4 conversion kit. something like this:

you can find those kind conversion kits on ebay all the time. Most of them on ebay will have daylight bulb in them, but i recomend finding the ones that doesn't have them.

But if you want to stick with the brightest lights that you can buy in a store, i would go with silverstar. I know they have high price but they are worth it, trust me.
Just remember, you get what you pay for.

Thanks everybody for the good info. I went to Walmart today and did a close look on headlights. I looked at the GE HO (high output) package for H6054. It shows a comparison chart saying the HO version gives 55w low beam vs the standard 35w low beam in a standard H6054/H6052 light. So. it seems like the standard 6054 low beam is also 35w (which is what I'm using now, sucks!).

I did not see any H6054 silverstar there but they do carry other silverstars such as 9004, 9007 etc. And they are selling them at $20 a piece ! I think it will be even more expensive for the seal beam silverstar. I wonder if Autozone or Advanced are cheaper???

I thought of H4 conversion and went to ebay check them out. Not expensive though. But I hate to run new wirings if I don't absolutely have to. I also don't see any H4 bulbs in walmart so I don't know their wattage.

Say, if the H4 bulb is running at 55w low beam and the silverstar is also at 55w low beam, then what is the advantage to convert to H4 instead of putting a pair of silverstars?

Well, I have owned my 3g for 13 years and consider myself turned from a kid into an old fart. Eyes start to go downhill and don't see as good at night as before. For safety, my headlight upgrade seems unavoidable.
