ok sorry if i've been off for a while, anyway this is what i've been up too lately. found a lot of damage as far as rust on the hatch rear panel, the left rear wheel well was smashed flat in the back, and the hatch floor was buckled right under the vent outlet under the rear bumper, also the left rear corner right at the weld seam behind the taillight was buckled in. all the sheet metal is now straightened out,it took a lot of hammer and dolly work, but the damage around the corner of the taillight is now back to factory condition, the bucking in the hatch floor involved climbing into the hatch with a sledge hammer and knocking the corner of the floor back into alignment, this is the part hidden under the side plastic, and i also hammered and dollied the wheel well back into shape,as well as the hidden sheet metal under the bumper. as soon as I can i have to remove the tail lights and all the plastic trim on the back of the car,as well as the bumper, then i will sandblast the entire rear panel before sealing it with epoxy primer. this will stop the spread of the rust permanently. it had hidden rust around the taillights,as well as unrepaired damage under the bumper near the muffler, also the wheel well area with the damage was heavily rusted. as well as the smashed corner. on top of all this the inner steel rear bumper has now heavily rusted, this will also get sandblasted and epoxy sealed.

Wondered where you went.... that car seems like more trouble than it's worth IMO, but damn, props for sticking to your project!

Can't wait till your finished.

Look into POR15. It's way better than epoxy primer.

man, u need a better camera. the one i got i paid 120 for it gives crystal clear pictures. you can get a cheep one for like 100 and it will be good enough for the net.

anyways, good luck with the project. we are getting a burst of warm air so i will be working on my hatch soon

like 89 said POR 15 is good stuff , kinda hard to come by but all of us buick olds and montecarlo guys use it on rust prone parts and rusted parts. basically if you did the whole car in por-15 thers a good chance that the car will never ever rust again

yea i know about the Por stuff, the eastwood brand was tested against it and is supposed to be way better, anyway the epoxy primer is just a base to seal rhe metal, since these areas on the hatch are prone to rust again it's best to use on that. they always rust around the lights and in the corners, when I'm done sandblasting there won't be any rust left anyway, just going to mask off the car and blast the entire rear panel and the corners near the lights. the sand blasting will remove all the rust. yea it's a lot of work but since this is a custom- restoration this is what comes with it. all the metal on the car is completly straight now, that was the last piece to do. once it's blasted and primered the car will be ready to start primering. I figure in the last year my wife and I have put about 300 hours just into the metal work. I also found I need to replace the light gaskets, instead of spending a fortune on factory gaskets I found the 3/8 thick neoprene material at msc for like 21 bucks for a 38 ince by one foot piece. that gasket is just a flat piece of material anyway. lot of work but it could have been a northern car and had a lot of rust, this just had a bit and some atlanta road rash.

Have a link to the test where POR-15 was proven inferior? I don't really believe it til I see real results from a test, because that stuff is insane. I painted a section of an old steelie and left it out side for 3 winters and it didn't budge.

Ah. I still say that's bullshit.

1. They thinned out the POR15. Nobody does that if they use it, it's almost like glue. It's MEANT to be painted on with a brush.

2. It's an eastwood product published in an eastwood mag. Hellooooo...

well those articles are bull , all the people i know and even myself have used it on our 80-87 GM g-body cars and even the older oldsmobile people i know use it , basically you paint it on , you can reduce it a little bit so you can spray it but i reccomend on getting a junk spray gun b/c you will never get that gun clean after you use the stuff , there are a few people i know that painted the frame with this stuff and they havent had a bit of rust come back. trust me its a product that u will buy and u will like

I agree. POR15 is meant to be brushed on, not reduced like crazy and sprayed on.

OK a bit of an update,my wife and I got to the school about four o clock, pulled the rear bumper, the taillights, the licence plate holder assembly, the plate, everything on the back of the car, taped up all the holes in the back, got the car completly masked off in heavy duty plastic, then i sandblasted off all the rust on the back, and in the wheel well, this was a nightmare, the hood i had to use fogged up about every ten seconds,so i had to go through the procedure of shutting off the machine, cleaning my visor and starting over about that often. it all got blasted,I got those areas in primer, and it was all back together by 9:00. we took a lot of pics, but I haven't got them developed yet. I'b beat

Try some rain-x antifog on your visor. :P

:) that visor is beyond rain-x,it's ready for the trash,as soon as I can get these pics developed i'll post them.there is so much ducttape on that blast helmet it looks like it's out of one of those b-movies from the fifties. but the main thing is, the rust is gone. I've got to put the piece back in that goes under the taillights, then next quarter my wife and I are ready for paint and primer. finally. also the fiberglass piece that goes in he hatch and holds the monitor,it's almost ready for upholstery. the monitor itself is fitted. finally getting somewhere with this car.
