I was looking on Cardomain and found this:

http://img440.imageshack.us/img440/5033/ledlight29ji.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

http://img440.imageshack.us/img440/4762/ledlight38xo.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

does anyone kno anything about a how-to on this or anyone that has done this? looking for information, thanks. If i can't find any info, then I'll be going to the Junkyard for practice.

shouldnt be to hard, i was planing on doing the same thing... all you do is get ride of the factory bulbs and wire a LED w/ a resistor in their place.

Problem is the LEDs are too focused. The beam is too narrow, it needs to be diffused more to look nice.

LEDs are LEDs are LEDs. You'll be paying over 500% more than you need to if you buy from radioshack, pep boys, etc. If you want them cheap order them from an electronics catalog, like these:

ya because Ive seen the ones that they sell in pepboys and its like 10 bucks for 3 or 5 LEDs, its a big rip off

Still not enough. It needs a diffuser panel of some sort.

Actually, I have seen pretty good prices at Fry's on small parts like LED's and they have a good selection. They also sell those little "bulb condoms" which would reduce the light output somewhat. You can also find the little condoms at Auto Zone in different colors. LED's won't dim with your dimmer wheel.

For any of you in the Dallas area, Tanner Electronics on Valwood has a bunch of stuff like this that you can buy inidividually and it's dirt cheap.

He did, and if diffues them quit well. And Besides if your replacing the bulb you want a focused beam, because those little plastic pieces on the buttons are meant to be bright. And if you dont them really bright, use a lower intensity LED

Well. Sorry. No. It does not DIFFUSE them QUITE well. It isn't diffused at all, hence the really harsh bright spots on the thing. Look at your stock panel. It does not have super bright spots because the light is diffused and even.

well the point of having these leds is for it to be brighter than stock :werd:

i'm going to do it. i have the LED's sitting right here and wanted to do something with them. i might start today, i'll definately take some pix and show how i did them.

I think the intention was to be brighter EVENLY, not spots of light. That looks like ass.

Well, from personal experience with LEDs, I have found that sanding them does diffuse the light. If you think about, it does work. But it depends on the intensity of the LED, as to how good that works. If you sand the glass on a super bright LED, its going to diffuse, but since its so bright, and since the LED is a focused beam of light, its not going to diffuse all that well. And since the goal is to have a even spread of light, you will want to sand the LED, AND use a lower intensity LED. This combination will help diffuse the focused beam and even distribute the beam of light into the clear piece in the button, which in turn, diffuses the light again. If you use a super bright LED, your get just that, a super bright LED.

No matter how much you sand an LED hte fact remains that it's a tiny bright spot. You'dneed to add a panel that helped diffused the light better in order for it to look GOOD.

Careful, those are most likely surface mount LEDs. They're impossible to solder correctly, or remove without damaging them unless you're very very very skilled at soldering.

ok, so far i've wired in 2 led's into the climate control thing that has the low and hi setting and heater slider thing. needs a couple more so its going to have those probley tomorrow. i tried to get ones to work in my blinker indicators on the gauge cluster, but they really didnt work or something. one of the resistors went bad right away. maybe because they blink so fast? i have led blinkers in the tails and bumper lights so they just blink fast anyway. i took them out and put the bulbs back in. i figure i'll just use them on the climate controls.

Looks great to me and even better in person.

Sanding the tops flat difuses the light and does make the light less focused by about twice as much coverage area than without sanding. It still is fairly focused but it does help.

My leds dim with my dimmer switch. I dont know how some of you might have hokked them up but it dims fine on my car.

what are the tiny gauges on the steering column? But anyway, the whole thing looks pretty good, especially if they dim. I usually have my stock lights dimmed 50%, but LEDs are cool because of all the colors you can get out of them.

That looks awsome.

Don't forget guys, the LED's are actually enclosed in a plastic lens that is meant to focus the light forward. But by sanding that lens down and sanding the sides you will cause that light to bounce everywhere. You are basically creating tinly flat surfaces all over the top of the plastic that focus the light in every direction.
