How many f@#*n distributers are there? My 88 EXi I think has a Toyo. The Haynes manual says Toyo. The parts store says Hitachi, and the wreckers have a Fed Tec. WTF!! I think I have an A20 block.

Help!

I think there are 2, the toyo (TEC) and the hitachi. The toyo has the external igniter on the side of the case, look and see if there is a small flat panel on the side of the case.

ok i think there are three diff looking ones. i think carbed accord has hitachi. never saw toyo on carbed.
and EFI has this big distributor i think this one is toyo. i am not sure though.
but i know EFI has diff distributor than carbed.

if u have a sedan, you probably have an externail ignitor distributor which is a TEC mostly its a TEC on efi cars with external ignitor. Even on the carb cars, its TEC but u can look at the difference cause it does not have an ignitor on the outside. all u gotta do is, look at your distributor, go to the junkyard or the dealership and get the exact same looking one with matching part number. thats it. and from your id i guess u have an efi but its an EX-i so i am not sure what kinda u have. Look at the top of the vacuum diaphram on ur distributor, does it say TEC?

tec > external igniter ( the small squred siler thing on the distributer )
Hitachi > nothing is on the distributer ! :)

My TEC distributor has "TD10N" stamped into the case. It only fits in one way so it is no problem to line it up right. It may look like the tabs could fit 180 degrees off, but they don't. I found a brand new one in the box on eBay last year, but I also have the one I rebuilt myself with new bearing, bushing, seal, springs, and weight bushings. If you're putting in a used one it is very likely going to be worth the effort to at least disassemble and clean the thing up to make sure that it all spins freely and that the plastic bushings for the weights are still intact. In my rebuilt I drilled out the weights a bit and used bronze bushings.

You won't really be able to tell by looking at it because both tabs look like they are the same size. They are not, though.

mine has TEC stamped right on it in between the coil and wire hookups :D usually the aftermarket ones do that to make it easy to check, but if you go to a part store they will ask for hitachi or TEC (aka toyo)

when you put your car on TDC the dizzy rotor should be facing wire one...then 3rd...very easy to tell with the cap off
