An aftermarket tack would work, but first I would see about getting another gauge cluster and see if you still have the problem. If you still have the problem then the temp gauge is probably just a loose wire near the senor, but i have no clue about the tach.

Get a wiring diagram for the car, Trace all the wires that go to the tach.
I searched through the factory service manual and couldn't find anything for the tachometer. Yes an aftermarket tach will work. As for the temp gauge,
bad ground connection somewhere ? I am not sure, but If I were you I would have a reputable vehicle elctrical specialist check out your electrical system.

I had the same temp problem you are having. Check the ground that connects to your valve cover. The tach problem, chech your wiring. If you can't find the problem in the wiring it is either the cluster (unlikely) of the distributor (likely). My tach went nuts, bouncing all over the place. Replace the distributor. You can get a used one for like 20-45 dollars. when you do get one check the rotor shaft and make sure there is no play. easy way to check is to see it the rotor has been hitting the cap terminals and nearly sawing them in half.

i dont see how a aftermarket tach would work if the factory one wont?
i check near the distribuor cape and all cables seemed fine....but i didnt open it till tomorrow.

but if everything is fine there what else can be wrong or if something is wrong
how can a aftermarket tahc work

An aftermarket tach gets its siginal straight from the coil. It should have no problem unless there is a problem with your ignition system.

(confirms EricW's statement) right on

Keep in mind, if you can't find a cheap aftermarket tach, but you CAN find a cheap replacement gauge cluster, try that first. If the difference in price is nill (and you think it would be cooler to have an aftermarket tach anyway), then go for it. It will work. good luck.
