The A20 and H22 both have 42 teeth and both have the same tooth pattern, as TWOLOUDNPROUD showed in this thread (http://www.3geez.com/forum/showthread.php?t=47289):

H22 belt on A20 gear.

Anyone happen to have an H22 gear sitting around and want to see if it would work on the A20? It's just a matter of making sure that the cam gear fits on the cam shaft, and that the offset for the gear is similar. If it fits we could have a cheap source for adjustable cam gears.

wow, i WOULD like to help as much as i can, but unfortunately i cant cause i dont have an H22 cam gear nor do i have the extra cam... wouldnt it be easier to measure the offset of both cam gears, and then pull a cam out of a junker to test fit?

I would like to just pull the parts out of a junkyard car for measuring, but no where around here has H22 engines on hand.

I do have an extra stock A20 cam gear sitting around, I can take measurements from that and post it later.

Why would they be the same size gears? Honestly...

The last thread ended ended with no conclusion on the matter. It was just assumed that someone would try it, and report back. No one did. I would try it myself, but I have been unable to find a gear at a local junkyard.

I did not want to dig up the old thread because it was more about the phrenology cam gears that were on ebay than the possibility of using an H22 gear.

Bottom line is, we won't know if a H22 cam gear will work until someone tries it, or at least gets measurements (offset and cam diameter) from an H22 cam gear.

Yeah, I have seen the adjustable cam gears available on ebay, but I really do not want to spend that kind of money if I do not know if it is going to work. All that is needed for testing and measurements are the OEM gears. I never see them for sale online because I guess most people consider them worthless.

I was watching ebay for a while, but no one had them for sale. One guy had some for sale for $10 ($15 shipped) on Honda-Tech. but he was out by the time I talked to him.

According to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Honda_engines) the 1993 - 2001 USDM Prelude should have the H22 engine. It's the only other Honda engine to have 42 tooth cam gears.

doesn't the 99-01 prelude have an h22 too? and what about the h23? does it use the same cam gear? and if you're lucky, you can find an h22 swapped into other cars too.

You caught me as I was editing my post. :)

The H23 cam gear is different than the H22, it has less teeth. I forget the exact count.

Edit: H23 cam gears have 34 teeth.

H22 came in the:

92-96 Prelude (4th gen) VTEC model, 190hp
97-01 Prelude (5th gen) any model

in 97, 195hp
98-01, 200hp

JDM H22A in the Type-S model produced between 97-01, 220hp.

Phrenology's thread.

You should honestly look into a SOHC engine and use their crank gear as well to keep the diameters matched up.

I am not too worried about the outer diameter of the H22 cam gear. It should match up perfectly with the A20. They both have 42 teeth, and since the belts teeth spacing match up, they would have to have the same outer diameter.

And I had no luck finding any other crank timing gears that would fit the A20. (over here (http://www.3geez.com/forum/showpost.php?p=570978&postcount=142)). There are still blocks left to check, but the search was not going well.

Well smaller diameter and less teeth would have the same belt teeth spacing as a larger diameter with more teeth, thats why I didn't feel that image helped any.

but as you said both are 42 teeth so I guess the diameter would be the same.

You also want to consider the construction of the cam gear beyond how cheap they are... you don't want to buy something that will fall apart or slip.

I have an AEM H22A gear here. It's not the same diameter as the A20A. I'll post pictures.

Too bad.

if all the tooths are spaced out properly, and the belts will fit around it properly, wouldnt it work? i figured the tooth count was the only thing that really mattered much

Oh well...

What about the camshaft inlet diameter?

carotman

I'll check the cam diameter. I got this camgear by error so I'm kinda stuck with it.

the guy who was going to do the cam gear backed out from the group buy...i guess you have to spend your money and get an adjustable eagle cam
