My 88 LXi was running great. One day going up hill it chugged a little when I was on the gas. Next day it did the same thing. Third day it died and won't start. Turns over and occasionally begins to fire but never starts.

Sounded like a fuel filter to me so I replaced it. In the process of replacing the filter I noticed there was plenty of fuel in it and easily poured out of the output side of the filter. So I checked for spark, and found a good spark present at the #1 cylinder.

I have not checked the codes yet but will do that after work today. Since I found out how to do it this morning on this forum. (Thanks guys)

Any sugggestions on where I should focus my efforts?

Thanks

17 blinks - VSS

Would this actually prevent the vehicle from starting?

Mine is carbed and it happened to me the other day...Turns out the car was flooded...It screwed up the plugs and it had to be drained.

1st. check your fuel pump relay. you can resolder it to make it work again.
2nd. check the fuel pump and make sure it is pumping fuel.
3rd. VSS is speed sensor, it shouldn't cause the problem, but i would fix it if i was you. try resetting ecu. see if that will help.

Very cool, thanks for the advice.

1) Relay checks out fine.
2) I can hear the fuel pump when I turn on the key
3) I don't care about unitl I get this silly car started

What's next, anymore guidance, please?

Thanks,
Vince

Okay, got it.

Cleared the ECU and the VSS warning went away.

Sheperd79 - Thanks for the guidance
