slot port box

ok, i made a box this week for some new subs i got this weekend. I chose to go with a slot port design and here are some pics.

And I also have a question. Are some subs not made to work in a ported box. I know of some free air speakers, which suck in my opionion. But why would a sub be made to only work in sealed enclosures??
I ask because the speaker seems to have a long throw, too long really. I believe a sealed box would help eliminate some of that cone travel. Could I be right?

Depends on the speaker...They are all designed different.

You are right, those volphenhag's are not made for a ported enclosure. I didn't know that speakers could be designed like that. show how much i really know. I put em in a sealed enclosure.

That was a really easy box to build. If anyone was too try it. The pics are the evening i got everything cut and some of it glued together. I still worked on it. I don't have anything to measure out a circle to cut, so I did the speaker hole by eye. It had to be sanded into shape. The whole box got a good sanding. It still needs carpet and I was thinking of some kind of flashing-like for the porthole. Maybe some aluminum to smooth the look of the port.

I tuned the box at 45hz; at frequencies below the tuning of the port, the speaker gradually begins to act as if it were not enclosed at all. It is very easy to screw up a ported box if you just guess at the size and length of the port or the tuning frequency for the box. Not only will a poorly designed box sound bad, but it can easily damage the speaker if it is played hard. I should've tuned the box to 35hz at most.

my sony p5's love the snail shell as they call them its cool u did a step by step but u should bring that bottom board all the way to the other side and leave the same size opening

yeah thats a good box designe because you can get a really long port in a tiny space. you can even bring that bottom board across and back up part ways if you really needed a specific size port(for comp)

I ended up puttin a JLaudio in it. It sounds nice. It is a good box design. Different port lengths tune the box to different frequency right? I don't really understand everythinng about ports.. But I do like the sound from a ported box. I am thinkin of building a box for the volphenhag's that they could work in. I'm thinking of a bandpass box. Maybe using a slot port for the ported side. Anybody ever seen a bandpass with slot ports?? I need some ideas of how to design it for two subs. I'm gonna probably have to build a bandpass box for one sub, then if it works build another for the other sub. Then join the two. that sounds easy for a first run. Aren't sealed boxes supposed to hit harder but ported boxes are supposed to bOOm?? Is a bandpass box getting the best of both? I get alot of my information from www.jlaudio.com that's where i got the box specs that i used in the box above.

sealed are tighter and quieter, ported are louder and slightly boomier. bandpass just sucks unless you are competing, they are extra loud within a certain range, and then fall off dramatically outside of it.

Efficient and small, just what I need.

i dont really like them since i have 2 10 inch kickers in a band pass box and the first time i turn it up i might of mest it up cuz now i can hear my box rattle like heck...also my amp is too big for it...im pushing a 310RMSx2 amp into a 110RMS speaker...they feel like its going to blow up...im selling the amp cuz i already have a 150RMS amp for one 10

3rd order - ported enclosure/bass reflex
4th order - bandpass enclosure (single port)
5th order - bandpass enclosure (single port) with a lowpass xover wired to the speaker
6th order - dual port bandpass/dual reflex (both front and rear chambers are ported or one chamber is ported to the other chamber which is ported outside the box also called series tuned.)

haha looks just like my box in my civic! i have a 12" w6 in it. it sounds pretty fucking loud! but most of the time its on a low gain because my gf doesnt really like the boom boom. lol heres a few pics
