View Full Version : Intake idea, tell me what you think.

I've used a short ram for a while, and before that I had a full CAI, which I'm considering going back to, but I had a nice and simple idea for some direct cool air to the motor.

Cut a hole in the hood, install a nice looking grate behind it, then run one of those autozone intake flexpipes to both the manifold and the hood. You could always take the filter element out of a cotton element cone filter and place it between the end of the flexpipe and where it connects to the hood.

I know that this would result in some nice cooler outside air, but what I'm wondering about is if the shape of the new intake could cause some problems. First off I know that supposedly the reason a cone shaped filter works so well is because of it's shape, or at least that's what most companies that make them claim. So by simply having a flat patch of filter surface exposed at the end of a tube what would be the affect?

put a hood scoop to help force air in there. otherwise the flow of air over the hood will actualy hurt the power.

really? that's odd.

Oh another good point. Any have any idea if the ripples in the tube could actually negatively affect performance or response?

Yeah dude the pressure drops and you make it harder for the car to breath.

It's like blowing over the end of a straw when it's in a glass of water... the water in the straw will rise because pressure will drop in the straw putting less resistance on the water in the straw then the water in the glass.

DELTA (power tool company) makes a dust hose in like 3" and maybe 2.5" that has a smooth inner lining but the exterior has those bumps.

You should do what POS CARB did... there is a good deal of air rammed into the WELL where your mechanical linkages for the window wipers are.

The air hitting the windwhield flows both up and down the glass I guess.

So cutting a hole maybe in a 2.5" but squish the circle shape so it's oval... then you can place the oval higher up on the firewall to keep it away from the base of the WELL where water might get to it.

here is the pic of the idea.

Exhaust pipe adapters are like $5 in an auto parts store... you can put a hammer to one of the 3" to 3" or 2.5" to 3" adapters then hammer it to make it into an oval shape... next trace the shape of the exhaust pipe onto the firewall and cut the hole... slide in the exhaust pipe adapter... on one end to hold the pipe in place and help seal in air you can cut a rubber PVC style pipe connector to go on one end of the exhuast pipe thereby holding the pipe in place... also you may want to add a hose clamp.

The beathable "AREA" is something you need to consider. A flat peice of filter over the hole is like 5% of the area of a cone filter.

You're better off running the stock air box with K&N filter and with the intake pipe on the air box cut short... then run the pipe from the air box to the ram air.

The cone I think is for the transition of the air into the pipe it reduces how much the air has to turn to... something like that.

A flat peice of filter over the end off the pipe will vibrate with the air... may cause problems.

I wonder if the air box can be installed backwards... then the intake pipe would face the firewall...

i think your gonna be better of with the firwall idea cause that hose will rip off everytime you open your hood if you go with your original plan

why do you say that? It's a flex-hose, it should just come up with the hood.

Or you could just mount the assmbly inside the engine bay so it doesn't come up at all, like the shaker hoods on muscle cars.
But I like the cowl idea better. Nice drawing, dude.

what about rain

I'll stick with my cold air my good man.

I'm not devising something a little more ingenious than the "open hole to the outside" approach that originally crossed my mind. I'll keep you all informed.

You just need to make sure that your intake does not bring water into the engine when it rains.

I have a friend who had a 70 Cutlass W31 when we were in college. He located a factory ram air hood from a 442 (which was made of fiberglass BTW) and installed the vacuum controlled factory ram air air cleaner housing. Even in those days the psychological benefits of the intake sound far outweighed any real performance gains. It looked pretty cool, though.

You could use dryer vent hose for the flexible part without too much trouble, but I am not sure how you would keep the filter from becoming saturated with water in a downpour.

You could just make a functional hood cowl like me....

What are your hood pins pining to? it looks too far back to be the frame surrounding the headlights?

I love that hood. Did you make it? If not please tell me where I could get one

the only reason i was saying ti would rip off is that i just figured that if the hose is connected to the hood that when the hood piviots open the opening in the hood and the TB are gonna grow farther apart correct? so then you would have to hve ATLEAST enough pipping so that the pipping isnt h-core streching when the hoods open, and just by a quick guess i would say you would need at least a min. of 4 inches of piping ( depends on location of intake hole ) with the hood closed and probable double that with the hood open so in my eyes you would have an extra 4 inches of piping that is gonna have to fit or fold up somwhere, which in turn could affect flow and possibly be worse off then a short ram or a full CAI

hehe, forgot you were efi... still I think a sheet of filter over the pipe is a bad idea... maybe make a box around a cone filter and then direct air to the box with a 3" hose either from the hood or behind the firewall.

My dad and I made the cowl and attached it to the stock hood. The hood pins are attached to the headlight supports. (Locking hood pins, not so great in MN :) ) It wasn't so great getting the ice out of the key slot when I needed to.

I'm glad you guys the hood, I know I do.

Well I found the mystical DELTA hose. It was honestly the best hose out there and proably still is... It the long hose in the second picture, I uses to for my carb CAI in like 1998, flat interior lining, only the exterior has ridges.

o the curse of living in renton (seattle's little suburb) it rains so sucking water into my intake is always a big problem and probably why im taking soo much time to research it before i do it. so i dont ruin anything. but im definatly going to do some R&D on the intake idea, put a twist on it maybe see if i can solve the moisty wett filter problem.
