View Full Version : stalls easy while pulling away

Here's my question that's been bothering me for ever. When pulling away in any manual transmission fuel injected Honda (from 1987 on up to 2006's), you have to slip the clutch more than a carburated Honda or any fuel injected Toyota or Mazda etc. There's something in the fuel system management of EFI Hondas that does this and it's annoying. (Question) Is it the mapp sensor or crank sensor that senses the engine rpm getting low that makes the fuel pump shut down or something and can it be modified, computor re-programed or after market sensors installed so it doesn't do it? Almost every car out there you can start to let the clutch out then add a little throttle and away you go smooth as a babies bum but not Hondas. Try that with an efi Honda and it will stall or try to stall and stumble. It aint my driving habbits. Because one has to slip the clutch a little it causes pressure plate hot spots and eventually the start to shudder at take-off. I've been driving Hondas since 1986 (Accords and Civics) in fact I sold them for 5 years so I know them well. There must be other Honda folks who know what I'm talking about. I won't by a 5 speed because of it but I would like to. Any feed back would be appreciated at
[email protected] as well as on this 3-Gees site for all to see.
Thanks, Mike Nova Scotia, Canada

you probably didn't had your clutch adjusted properly. I don't have any problem taking off. i can take off at idel with no problem. Try adjusting the clutch OEM specks.
The other thing, make sure your clutch is good and the flywheel is not burned.

Appreciate your comment and advice but it isn't the clutch adjustment. It's the same with hydraulic clutches in newer Hondsa as well. As I said in my article it's the fuel injection management of Hondas. I've driven hundreds of Accords and Civics 5 spds during the last 20 years and other 5 spd owners I've spoken to have said the same. It's not a big problem but somewhat annoying especally with Civics. Anyway thanks again for your comment and advice.

Work on your launch technique. I drove my friend's Civic around for a couple days and I definitely know what you're talking about. It's just something you have to get used to... But once you get used to it, it's actually pretty nice, and you can avoid the hot spots thing, too.

it must be civic thing. Because I drive accord 5 speed and my GF has 01 civic with auto.
I drove my friends 01 civic ex with 5 speed and i actually liked a lot better. it lunches a lot smoother and faster.
