View Full Version : Video of my car running... sort of....

I am uploading the video right now.
I dont have any fancy video editing software, so its a huge file, and not very long either. Deal with it.
Basically I got the car to idle today, but it appears to be leaking small amounts of coolant out the corner of the headgasket.
Its running SUUUUPER fricken rich, as you can see by the clouds of fuel that come out of the muffler when I start to wrap the engine up at all.
The video doesn't really capture the sound very accurately at all. If you turn ur speakers up a bit it is better, but honestly the car sounds straight up mean in person, and the muffler tone is a lot less "mufflerish".... it sounds pretty ricey in the video IMO.
But this shows that it at least runs... I took it around the block and it stubled really bad on any load, so Im sure the timing is still WAY off. Also when I pulled it back into the garage the car wouldn't idle again (just like before).
Enjoy the lame ass video...

EDIT: its 65mb so its going to take a while to upload. As soon as its finished uploading, it will be there though... :)

ahh the intial startup of a new engine...It is a time of joy and a time of anger. You get happy cause it runs, but then you notice a small oil leak, it doesnt idle, or it leaks coolant.
All I can say is congrats for getting it going and have fun fine tuning and solving the little problems.
But again congrats and break it in properly!

I can probably take a stab at reducing the size of the video. I still need to download it though.

yeah i used pinnacle for making the video smaller...its a free program but i only used it then uninstalled it. i had like 1gb worth of video and it converted to 82mb mpeg...so your video might be like 9mb if you reconvert it. your car is sick... i just love the way it reved up...must of cost a prety penny tho. i like your stearing wheel...what car is it from and will it connect to cruise control and horn ?

yeah mike i tried using RAD converter but it only picked up 16 frames. :(
if you happen to have software that will shrink it down, just lmk and I can give u ftp access to my site to upload it. (or maybe u can send it to me thru gmail if that is easier...but i dunno their file size limits)
yeah i saw the plug wire move too... i will double check that plug to make sure its in there right, they all seemed to be nice and snug when i checked them before startup, probably the wire is just a bit loose. :)

heck yes! hatches and washington baby! :)
i like 2dr the next best, then the 4dr. except jons car, his 4dr is probably my all time favorite at this time.
it sounds REALLY good in person, but as you can tell it runs pretty rough for the time being. I am going to replace the headgasket again with something a little different and then I imagine I will have to shell out $500 on a good adjustable timing light and a wideband. :) :(
the a pillar pod is an autometer from 88-91 EF honda civc/crx... fitment is not that great, but hey if you need instrumentation, its more important to have it than not have it cause ur pillar pod doesnt mount well. :D
my whoopdidoo AF gauge tells me im sitting at full rich the whole time. I am hoping by advancing the timing more it will lean out, but at the moment it throws CEL and stumbles under load, so i guess i need to check out the code (probably EGR) and take it one step at a time.

Is that an egt sensor you have there?
What kind is it and hows it working for you?
bobafett
05-10-2006, 09:55 PM
autometer egt. i think i hooked it up wrong, cause its not moving for me at all. :( all my other gauges are working, but this one stays on 400 degrees no matter what. :(
i havent had a chance to play with the wireing and check what i might have messed up though

Not the way I hear it.
It sounds like its hurting.
Still working on the video... Check the valve timing along with the engine timining.

valve lash has been painstakingly set to the stock specs since Im running a stock cam atm.
(.005 - .007) .006 intake cold.
(.010 - .012) .011 exhaust cold.
engine timing is an unknown. my cheapo timing light is hard to work with. the closest we 'found' on the flywheel was the 24b mark. but that was with my brilliant friend trying to time it.
its true that it wants 15btdc with the vacuum stuff plugged so there is no advance, right?
bobafett

Do you have a point of reference for what 15 degrees looks like as far as the tilt of the dizzy?
I am wondering if the dizzy is pointed backwards towards the firewall, or if its tipped forwards, or pretty close to centered.
Basically trying to get it close, cause I am having a heck of a time even seeing timing marks on the flywheel.
guaynabo89

does your flywheel have a tdc mark? If so the only accurate way is to get a timing light that is adjustable for degrees.
Thats what I had to to since my alum. flywheel only has a tdc mark and thats all.
bobafett

it has a couple marks, but I am having a really hard time telling which are which... i am probably going to buy the nice timing light anyway, just to accellerate the process and make it easier on myself. :)

I have the same problem with the timing, I guess I need to find a good timing light also. Although I Probably wont need it after I go OBD 1.

Sounds mean for a rice burner lol. My rice burner has that nice small hole in the muffler sound. Its my 96 Ram that has the mean sound.... http://media.putfile.com/Ram-Open-Headers
BTW, what all have you done to that thing? It almost sounds like it has a cam lope??? You will definitely have a heck of a sleeper when you are done though. I had thought about dropping the body of my cord onto a modified frame with a chevy 350 shoehorned in it somehow and putting quiet mufflers on it, and leaving the body just as it is, no new paint, nothing wild on it, just a basic looking accord, but oddly you might see a diff pumpkin peeking out from under the rear, and wonder why the rear tires squal when I shift gears LOL. Not a plan yet, just one of those ideas that may never come to fruition lol.

From 64 MB It's now 38 MB with slightly smaller window size. Quality has suffered minor loses.
I didn't shrink the video I just cropped it in some areas to reduce the size.
I want to try the H.264 quicktime encoding I've already tried the DV NTSC and MPEG-4 quick time encoding. They also have a seperate MPEG-4 that is .wmv as well as others like avi and flash etc.

ok guys... bought the super duper timing light....
the farthest advanced I can get is like 21 degrees btdc. :( i dont understand WHY, maybe they shaved the head / block enough to effect timing? so now I am wondering how to get more adjustment out of it. I might grab a JY dizzy and try to slot out the metal housing more to allow me to turn the distributor further. :(
but that certainly explains the way that its running.

the friggin h.264 crapped out on me and after a few hours of rendering tried to start all over again. This time I'm trying I think "Cinepack" after that I'll try and see if enabling the prep for streaming video helps lower things. I could also give you a 320x??? video for the dial-up folks.
EDIT: whelp the cinepack came out to be 70mb and looked crappier then the 30mb one so I'm sticking with what I got already.

Well i didn't just reencode it... I was messing with it in aftereffects, adjusting the image rotation and position to couteract the camera movement to get a nice steady image as if it was shot with a tripod. Thats also part of the reason i needed to crop the picture.
