View Full Version : A20A1, can this thing be EFI'ed?

Ok, Im tired of the damn carburetor and having a gutless car. I've thought about swapping in a B series VTEC engine. But I also just thought, is there a way to yank an EFI intake from another car that will basically just bolt on to mine? I could rebuild this engine and get it back in good shape, throw on an EFI intake, and maybe save some money. I dont think I would gain a ton of power, but maybe it would make the car less gutless, and make it easier to live with as far as idle issues and cold start are concerned?

Is this a possible idea? What all would be needed to do something like this?

It's a bit more work then that, but it can be done, and even if you were to swap a b series in you'd still need to convert to FI. Talk to Steve89DX, he's done the EFI swap, but he put a b16 in at the same time.

you need;

intake manifold w/injectors and fuel rail.
all fuel delivery feed and return including tank, or go with walbro inline pump
and run your own return line back.
ecu w/all wiring, black box.
throttle cable.
main fusebox and incab fuse box.

that should about cover it.

i should have a howto together soon once i get my shit together on how to make a butchered version run.

idle and cold start but if the engine is in bad shape, swapping efi isn't going to help a whole lot.

Holy crap what a PITA. Sounds easier to drop in another damn engine LOL. Well, screw that idea!!

even if you were to drop in an a20a3, you'd still need everything here. now if you buy one that's already efi, then you'll be ahead of the game.

yes, but if you have a DX, you're ahead of the game when it comes to weight.

DX-is own. Hopefully it won't be too long before I own one.

Well it's either my income does not improve and I end up keeping this car and dropping in an EFI engine of some sort in it, or my income does improve like Im hoping will happen soon, and I just set this car on fire and go buy a new Toyota 4Runner. God I love the 4Runners.......

You don't need an EFI engine. You only need the EFI parts from the donor car (Intake manifold, ECU, fuel return line, etc) There's no need to swap engines unless you want the higher comp ratios of the A20A3.

Well, reason I say that is that I wont pull the whole cabin harness and cluster out to put in a FI intake on my old tired engine. If I'm going to go though that much hell, I'm going to at least drop in an OBDII B-series VTEC engine and run it basically sepearated from the car's factory harness on it's own harness and PCM, and only tie in the essential items to make it work. I just didnt know there was so much to putting on an EFI intake onto this engine, I assumed it was not much more than swap em out, change out the black box, maybe slap in a new walbro pump, and screw a controller to the firewall from a donor car, and fire the bitch up. But its way more involved than that, nearly as much as grafting another engine into the car, but without much gain in power and driveability.

It is, however, a lot cheaper than a B-series. You can do it in one day if you know what you're doing.

it doesn't quite work that way. these cars are very integrated. by the time you build the harness you'll need, you would have swapped 3 cars to EFI, not to mention the fact that you need motormounts, shift linkages, and axles.

and it's a 12 HP bump. certainly more than worth the work. if you're going to use the 88/9 EFI engine, it's something like 22 HP difference. more power, better economy, and better drivability. certainly makes the EFI swap worthwhile.

i love my DX, wouldnt trade it up for anything.

You could also go a little further with the EFI swap and get a B-series intake manifolt, drill holes, and mount the sucka. Then get a short ram or cold air intake (hack what.. 5 inches from a civic one?) Then you're looking at whatt... 25 horse instead of 12? Plus you can be all cool with a b-series intake manifold =)

Thats my plan after this swap.. <yawn>

iswapping efi isn't going to help a whole lot.

ummm.... I say otherwise. :d

You can have some of my EFI parts I only used them once but EFI wasn't for me. I can give you the intectors and the parts of the intake manifold I have yet to sell. I also think I still have the vacuum box and ecu in the shed.

I cut up the wire harness and part of it is still in the car so it's not going to do you any good. I dunno where the relay is and various other bits.

I have the secondary plate throttle plates removed, I wanted to try and run it without the plated installed. I also had new gaskets for the manifold laying around somewhere. Too many projects for me to keep track of all these things.

I sent the TB to carotman. so no TB

Oh and my efi distributor went to another member on here.

My EFI alternator went to my accord. and I can't think of much else.

Just don't forget to upgrade your fuel line to handle the EFI pressure and don't try to use your carb pump to run efi.

Although you can use the EFI pump to run carb with the proper reg. :)

I may have the spare O2 sensor, I don't have the 4-2 exhaust manifold anymore and if I did I would have cut it up already to use it as a flange. The 2-1 a pipe is toast.

hey if you still have any of those EFI parts, i'm interested in converting my car to EFI..... leave me a PM w/ some details on the parts you have.
