ok, well as most of us know the air box on the carbed engine is pretty crappy and gets a lot of warm air. so, i've been trying to think up some designs for a new air box intake. something with a low profile on top of the carb to clear the hood, but still functional. i'm thinking of giving a shop some dimensions and letting them fab it up for me so it looks real nice. the shop i'm thinking of made fireplace caps that go up on the roof for the shop i used to work for. they had nice precise bends and were sealed on the seams. all you have to do is tell them the measurements and they will make it. anyway, i'm trying to also decide where the air filter is going to be located and what type i'm going to use. it'd be easy to use a stock type filter, but i want something that doesnt take the same room the one that the stock air box uses. maybe i should try and make something with a remote filter that is off to the side somewhere in a seperate box or something, but less restrictive than a stock style one. well if any of y'all have some ideas or pictures lets see them. i will probably draw something up and post it up here to see what y'all think.
i also wanted to make this intake system so it clears the hood with a spacer added on the carb. so i'd add an inch to what its sitting at now just to be safe.

Hrm... it would be better if you could get one that breaths straight down, not just from the sides.
I had the best time with the Edelbrock ProFlow Foam Intake.
I just recently ran across RamFlo filters... they offer a blank baseplate and all the mounting parts.
Both of these will be a problem with your spacer though.
My most sincere suggestion would be to try and fit on a 600 or 400 CFM RamFlo style filter but have whoever makes the base for it, sink the air cleaner base so that it bolts to the top of the carb but the outer part sits about an inch or so lower then the carb. That way the filter sits lower.
It should be nice as long as the filter isn't butted right up to the hood when it's closed.
Also be weary of gettinng the filter too low... or the roof of any custom box too low. If you get too close to the brass vents hanging over the barrels the carb will act like its out of gas when you drive... I had the problem when I made a low profile air cleaner attempt.

i didnt think of anything like that, but i'll see if that's something doable. i really wanted something like an "arm" to connect to the top of the carb, then run back to an air box like maybe mounted on the fire wall since i dont have the black box there anymore. then figure in what type of filter i'd want to use. then from that run an intake pipe somewhere maybe in the fender or to a hood scoop to get something other than engine bay air thats hot as hell. i'd really want to do it through a hood scoop though, that was my first idea. i'm still open to other ideas. i just want a clean intake thats not going to really bother the hood clearance or stick out really besides a scoop of sorts.

You can tap into the firewall.. and have a direct connection between the firewall and the box on the carb... but I would have the filter located inside the box on the carb... any link between the firewall and box will need a flexable connection, maybe like a 3" rubber pipe coupling. Remember that it can be sguished vertically and only be 1.5" tall rather then the full 3". and you'll just increase the width.

so hondaboy are you looking up to fabing a box like the civic one just not as tall?
cause i was thinking of making something too

yeah, kinda like the civic box. but like you said not as tall. something slimmer, but great air flow. i think that guy can make me exactly what i'm wanting too. and i dont think its gonna cost too much. basicly, i just need to make some basic measurements and just tell him what it is i want. i still have yet to draw something up. just havent had the moment since every time i try i get side tracked. damn add!

i was thinking something like this:
http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/3900/carbbox6kt.th.jpg (http://img20.imageshack.us/my.php?image=carbbox6kt.jpg)
where you can have a gradual slop up to a small round box on top of the carb and tack some nuts to the side of the box and you screw the lid into that and the pipe big enough for an intake
and if you want i work in a fab shop i could fab on up if you wanted
*edit* i know the pic is pretty retarded

Here were my small plenum snorkle intakes for the carb

And here they are in the same order top to bottom
This time I'll try to show you my two plenum designs.
The first one expands right after the intake pipe and then tapers towards the carb inlet.
The second one only expands when it reaches the area directly above the carb, the rest of the area stays about as small as the rest of the intake pipe.

the last one is closest to what i was thinking of. if i can find a non-ricey hood scoop i'd do something like a short ram intake. i'd like to find something that kind of goes with the accord's hood design of strait squared off lines.

here's the kind of scoop i'd like. with a triangular inlet, maybe not with the vents but whatever i can find that looks like this inset in the hood on the passenger side. something of this size or a bit smaller would be great.
