Black Trim Paint...Door Pillars....

Well, one thing that bugged me about my car was the black door pillars were all faded and blotchy. ArmorAll seemed to help, but it soon disappears and back to old ugly pillars. So, I tried some professional-looking rattle can Satin Black Trim Paint. Masked off the areas, sanded them down with some 400 grit, wiped the area clean with some DuPont Final Klean, and put on two coats of the trim paint. MAN, what a difference it makes, just a small item on the car now looks like new and makes the whole thing from the side look alot less it's age. Now I want to do the door trim, the bumper bumpstrips, the window trim, the wiper arms, and the license plate mounts. This really woke the car up visually. Worked out alot better than I expected for rattle can paint!!

Ok so I couldnt wait, sleep is over rated. The paint I used was Spray Max Trim Paint Satin Black KWA 680 602 bought at FinishMaster, a paint and body supply store. Enjoy!
Untouched and masking papers just put around the area (already did passenger side so reusing paper, that's why it already has overspray on the paper)

Sanded with 400 Grit, and wiped with FinalKlean to remove any traces of oils or wax. Final masking is now on

yeah man i just did mine like a week ago, it really does make it look some much better, I did the pillars and the driver side and the bumper and now i am on the passenger side but i have not found the time to do the other side and the front bumper but i will soon, but yeah it does help the look out very.

yeah that looks super sweet...the only problem is that you have to do most of the trim of the car....im going to used some plastic cleaner and then do a red scuff pad(equal to 400 grit) then dust it off and then shoot it with black trim paint...mine has started to look white...i also plan on doing the bumpers and everything that has faded in the last 18 years of my car

thats one of my next parts alog with the window trim and all the chrome i like the black look better

Thanks for the props guys. I'm going to do bits and pieces as I get time. I think I will leave the stock chrome pieces as they are, just do all the window trims and body trims. I've also thought about re-clearcoating the top body panels to bring back the shine. Polish and Wax just doesnt cut it anymore, and I'm afraid to buff it too hard for fear the clearcoat that's left is worn thin. Think some 1000 grit to scuff it up and shoot on a few good coats of clear will really bring it back to life. All in due time! :cheers:

Well I'm not going to clear the trim, that's not the look Im going for. I want the trim to look like new stock, which was a Matte finish. Clear will only go on the body panels.

That's not how they look like new. They look like clearcoated when new.

Not disputing you, just never seen one with those parts clearcoated. Every Honda of this era that I've seen has had a matte finish, even most new cars have trim in a matte finish. There are a few brands of cars here and there that Ive seen with shiny looking trim, but not many. My Club Cab Dodge had a shiny surface black decal on that section of the door panel to make the pillar disappear between the two windows. I painted it black basecoat when I was painting the rest of the cab and doors, and cleared the whole thing as one.

Regardless, I like the matte finish on the trim better anyway. gives it a nice contrast from the body panels while not attracting attention to itself. JMHO though.... :cheers:

sorry to bump an old thread...but I'm planning on doing my trim, but wanted to know if I should take the bumpers off to hit the bumper trim or if I should just mask it off really well.

Mask it off really well and ya should be ok. Dont forget to do the lip around the bottom as well.

I redid mine recently as well, with some of that Krylon Fuzion paint. Even though it says it's a satin finish, it still came out a little too shiny for my liking.

Im used to masking cars, but it still took about three hours to do the whole job on mine. Just mask it off, may want to use blue mask tape on the edge next to the moulding (get it close, and dont forget to tape of the moulding at the door openings inside the jam) then use cheap mask tape with newspaper about 1/2 inch on the blue tape. Just one layer of paper will do, about 20 inches on both sides of the moulding for overspray.
I broke it up some, I did one side at a time, and then did the front and rear at the same time. Here are pics of the first time I did mine, painted them brown but they came out too light so I redid them body color later

The other black trim is a different deal all together:
there is the window sill moulding and rear window trim, that has to be stripped off and replaced with special tape that is made for it, or carefully painted.
The B pillar trim can be painted just as RamThis has done here in this thread.

HUH? what are you replying to?
If it is about the brown moulding, I agree...the color came out too way too light for what I was going after.. that is why in case you missed reading it, I re sprayed it with the body color.
