View Full Version : Quad ignition coil?

I know there was someone on here a while back that was working on a prototype for quad coils or something, but im thinking about doing it, and it may be a different way....

Basically use the dizzy to send the 12V needed to the coil for it to fire.... So essentially, you put just a 12V positive to the INGITION on the dizzy, and each of the 4 points will have a wire provide power to the 12V input on the coil, and the coil directly hooked up to each plug...

And in theory it should work, the dizzy will act as a trigger to turn on/off the coil.

Theres 1 problem I see with it though, the coil might need more than 0.07 seconds to get to full power to give the plug sufficient power.... and also, im not sure if theres any good gains out of this idea either. All I need is 1 more coil to try it... ive already got 3 (2 in this car, 1 in donor).

Any comments/suggestions?

i would just get the MSD...from wut i heard they give you multiple sparks at low RPM so it burns all the gas...does sound legit

MSD is a sham. And a waste of money unless you are full race, high pressure turbo.

As far as your triggering mechanism, you could set it up to begin charging each coil 180 degrees away from your intended firing point. I mean, if you have all four, you can do it anytime you want, right?

Well that takes out the simplicity fact... unless theres 2 ways to trigger it, as soon as I give it 12V itll fire... and probably not fast enough to get to full power before the 12V is given to the other coil... lets see, at 1000rpm idling, each coil will be turning off and on 250rpm/60sec, like 4 times EACH second.... so that gives it less than 0.25 seconds to charge and fire before it has to do it again

im almost thinking that on the fact alone that it has 0.25 seconds between each pulse that it wont work, and im probably not going to bother trying... But would there even be any gains? I mean the only thing I can see it doing is that the coil could essentialy be full power all the time, instead of 1 coil firing 4 times a second (with full 12V power constant)

or maybe ill just that other coil I have and get some 1 way diodes or something and run all 3 coils in parallel. But by then I think I should upgrade wires, so I'll essentially have to do the whole thing over again

Also, just to clarify here, coils operate by charging up a magnetic field, and then when the ground signal is disconnected, the field collapses and shunts the power through the secondary winding. So while you may not see any real gain through most of the rev range, at high RPMs you may improve the spark power due to increased charge time.
