exhaust sputtering noise

Just purchased my second honda, a 1987 accord EX-i sedan, everything runs spectacular, however when I run it for a period of time, then return it to an idle, a very noticable sputtering noise comes from the exhaust, and causes the rpms to fluctuate a tiny amount, and shaking the car just a bit, almost like a subtle backfire. this occurs randomly, around every 5-6 seconds.

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated :)

As long as the car is tuned up, get good mpg and all its typical. They dont idle well mine never has and makes the bubbly sound. Run the AC and mine seems to idle great. I never really figured it out but Id guess it the way the EACV does the idle.

my car bubbles too, when i'm doing 40 in 3rd gear where rpm's are around 3-4k and i slam on the gas then suddennly let off it backfires almost all the way through the exhaust.

does it rev up to 2100 then sputter and drop to about 1000rpm?

yep. i think it's the carb myself. but i aint gonna pay bucks to get it tuned to the way it should be. i'll just listen to the car backfire for all i care. it's an everyday car. if it breaks down, oh well. i'll be carless for a bit. but i'll probably get another honda.

Mine backfires and rumbles all the time when i down shift or let off the gas. Mostly because I have stright pipe and a big bomb muffler lol. I'd chech your exaust to see if anything is missing and chech your air system for any leaks.
