OK, the last two accords I have had a 90LX and 89LX both suffered from rod bearing failures right after I got them. I just recentally acquired a 89 LX i and the oil is very brown and think owner says he had 20w50 in it. I want to switch to 10w40 but dont want it to knock. should I stick with 20w50 or take the risk with 10w40. car has 229,000 on it told bottem end and head gasket was done.

If freezing is not a problem, I would go w/ the 20W50 if you want to be safe. The higher viscocity will provide more engine protection against thermal breakdown in the oil.

But honestly, I use 5W-30 (when the Honda dealer changes the oil) and 10W-30 (when my mechanic changes the oil) and I haven't had any problems (yet). 10W-40 is probably plenty good enough.

I believe the 20W-50 will provide a little more engine protection and the 10W-40 will have a better fuel economy than 20W-50 (the Accord Owner's manual recommends the lighter 5W-30 as providing better fuel economy than the heavier 10W-30, so the lighter oil helps fuel economy).

It's probably more important to change both the oil and oil filter regularly, BEFORE the oil gets dark brown (unlike the previous owner of your car).

Peace.

Your owners manual says 5w-30 if i remember correctly. I would stay with 10w-40. it is nice all season oil.

Did you take a look at the old spark plugs?

They can tell you a lot about the current state of your engine.

Peace.

We use 5w/30 in most all of our customer cars. 10w/40 and 20w/50 usually only go in to the cars that are burning a bunch due to worn/stuck rings.
