Two Qs PowerSteering and Tranny

Ok I have a 89 LXi auto and when I first start the car powersteering works great feels a little sloppy but good, then when I start driving the car the power assist goes away completly and then sometimes comes back if you shut the car off for like 5 mins it comes back but then goes away again. Its full of fluid and the pump don't seem to be leaking. and the transmission seems to make a whining noise only in park put it back in neutral and it goes away, only seems to do this while hot.

Try replacing the P/S fluid first. Until I flushed mine out with new fluid, my P/S had sporadic performance. Another possibility is the control valve that mounts to the transmission. It decides the amount of assist that you get at various speeds. Have you checked the level and the condition of fluid in the transmission? Perhaps new fluid will help. Hope this helps.

P.S.: Sloppy steering may be caused by a worn rack. This can in turn explain the loss of steering assistance as the fluid heats up.
