i heard that ripped cv boots are a common problem on the 3rd gen, is this just the 3rd gen or does this happen on all cars that have them, what causes them to rip?, ways to avoid them ripping?

i havent had mine rip since i have had the car, since November

It's just a part that takes a lot of wear and this is something that happens to all cars. And you'll notice it especially on older cars like ours where the rubber starts to harden and form cracks which eventually lead to rips.

Yup. But they do give a warning and they are fairly cheap. Keep them clean if you can and do not replace them with universal boots. They are rubber, so they do fail, then the joint goes.
